izula or rc-3 for hunting bag

so far i have used the rc-6, izula, and just handled the rc-3 ( no real use). looking for a mainstay in the hunting bag and so far i am leaning towards the izula over the rc-3, but can't quite convince myself that, that is the right choice. both knives are small enough not to cumbersome and still have enough functionability to do the jobs required. so looking for alittle imput from some that have put the two through alittle more use than i and prehaps have had the same problem that i am currently having.

that was one thing that i did like on the rc-3 over the izula although i read somewhere on the forum that scales for the izula could be manufactured or purchased. an on a side not the micarta that makes up the handles seems to absorb alot of luquid, kinda noticed that with my brothers rc-6, which may lead to bacteria, odor, and general discoloration. or is micarta more resitant to that sort of thing?

I agree with texastony, RC-3 for a hunting bag, it would also make a good sized "modern patch knife" for a haversack.

RC-3 for hunting, hands down. The Izula can do it, but the RC-3 does it better. Have both, and the RC-3 comes hunting much more than the Izula. The RC-3 makes a great deer butchering knife as well.

Rc-3 For the hunting bag, due to the lack of scales and the fact the bare Izula=slippery when bloody and paracord absorbs the blood and the tallow gets caked into the braiding.
Now if you are planing on purchasing the empending scaled Izzy different story, although I would still choose the RC-3; I was not very fond of the Izula due to its size being a bit small for me.

(In the Contest pic Thread you can see for yourself within my pics the tallow and blood issues fore mentioned)

Izula - unless you never really plan on gutting or cleaning game with the knife.

I've gutted deer with both an izula and RC-4 and its a pain the butt to use again until you thoroughly clean the scales on an RC-3/4/6, etc. I can wipe the izula off and its good as new.

that said, I carry both the izula and the RC4 in my hunting pack and ONLY choose the izula over the RC-4 for gutting. both have clear and definite andvantages in my opinion. for the price, get both.

So if the micarta is a problem with cleaning.

You could buy the orange g10 handled rc3 or rc4.
The rc4 is not on your to buy list so go for the orange g10 rc3.
I think they will do the job.

I don't have an RC-3 but I'd probably go for it in the G-10 scales for a hunting role.

I think the RC-3 is the perfect size for a hunting knife and could serve other duties if you needed it to.

Howdy,

The Izula is a great size for field dressing deer, but is too slick without some scales or wrap.

I would just use a para wrapped Izula for field dressing, then cut off and throw away the para cord when done - easy cleanup. Rewrap after cleaning.

If you only go deer hunting once a year, and get one every year, 2 foot of para cord per deer is cheap and so easy!

For skinning, I prefer something bigger. The RC-3 or RC-4 (my favorite) would be better for this task.

I have both and have used both, and I prefer the RC-3 (nothing wrong with the izula though). the scales on my RC-3 MIL is really easy to clean, a little water and soap and it's like new!

what is the difference between the micarta scales and the g-10? not sure what exactly the two different scales are made out(difference in the material.

The micarta scales absorb liquids and the g10 doesn't.

Look at the pic thread on this rat forum and there probably will be a wet micarta rat.The micarta absorbs water and gets a darker color.

So its just the difference in material.

Rat uses 3 types of handle material.

Orange g10
canvas micarta for rc5/rc3mil/and desert tan blades
micarta for the other rats(can't find type but could be paper micarta)

If you look at the swat and the rc3mil handles they (look like they) are wet.
