long winded as usual...

heres the first kydex sheath
certainly not perfect but it works.
made it rectangular specifically for this kit.
do wish i had some larger eyelets, but used what i had.
not sure they are really even necessary....
next sheath this style, will see if i cant get the knife more centered.
doesnt seem to make any difference while wearing or extracting knife. but would look better

this kit is taken directly from this vid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BwUydd2JKo&feature=related

so its not an original idea. but i really liked this set-up and wanted to make one.
typically carry some gear in pockets while hiking, but wanted to create a neck knife kit.
the idea of getting separated from my gear seems unlikely...but...if it does happen,
depending on where i am and how far from whom/whatever
could be up s**t creek without some gear on my person

under the ranger bands you will find in this kit:
water purification tabs. i am gonna add a water(milk) bag but havent picked any up yet.
the esee magrod/firesteel that came with the izula kit.
some pjcbs in a tiny baggie.
spool of braided fishline.
tiny baggie with two fishing flies, one larger hook, two lead weights,
two swivels, two large eye needles, one safety pen, two utility blades.
micro light.
the bit of metal is a signal mirror but needs to be filed down
and the corners and edges rounded so as not to cut the ranger bands.
really like that he put some reflective material on one side for night signaling.
will pick some up next time im at the hardware store.
somewhere in this house is a baggie of button compasses.
when i find those will also add one.
there is a whistle hung on the cordage for easy access.

this one is gonna be a gift for one of my brothers.
he lives in montana and gets deep in the wilderness quite often.
tho he carries knives, a gun and food(and usually beer), he rarely carries much else.
(over the holidays i gifted him with a more extensive psk, that he does now carry in his bag, after a near mishap last fall)
he also carries a gps, but i've been in the mtns in montana with him many times
when yr deep enuf in a canyon, and/or heavy woods a gps and cell phone are useless.
and of course both depend on batteries.
this bro, tho having spent a lifetime getting into the wilderness, is seriously directionally challenged.
so was our pops, tho he was an avid outdoorsman and i learned a great deal from him over the years.
gratefully, i inherited our mothers sense of direction....
he needs all the tools/knowledge he has to get himself out alive if lost and alone.....
(he does have the knowhow to use the tools available to him...if he's carrying em)

there ya have it. my version of the izula psk
wore it the last cupla days
its really rather compact and doesnt feel awkward nor heavy under my shirt
(and disappears in the cleavage:D)

feedback always welcome
thanks

Sweet set up. Check those button compasses against a good one mine is quite a bit off.
thanks-i always try to remember to do that. the fluid filled ones tend to be somewhat online. of course a button compass aint really a navigational tool, more like a last ditch which way is north sorta...

That looks great! Not too much bulge with the stuff in the ranger bands, either.

Great lookin' set up, I also use my Izula as a backpack for other stuff, I knew I wasn't the only one.

already thinking about changing a few things. like putting the pjcbs in straw tubes, and eliminating one of the utility blades. maybe redundant with the izula...
might also do a hank of waxed cord instead of the spool. that would be "thinner"

the nrgs that the youtube guy uses is a longer knife/sheath than the izula, giving more rm to space things out. but im thinking the izula works jus fine.

interesting.. but i had a Newt Livesay neck knife and i never got used to it. now i can't find it so i think an ex-GF took it when she left.

anyway... i think that for *me* something like Maxpedition Janus on my belt would be a better answer for carrying a PSK. but that's just me thinking out loud, not a comment that this kit is "too big".

on the Xacto blades, they may be redundant with the Izula... or you could look at the CRKT Ritter Mk 5 knife. it's a tiny fixed blade that retails for about $15 and it's small enough to fit in an Altoids tin. that's a neck knife i might be able to wear. it's small enough to piggyback on the Izula the way the Izula piggybacks on the Junglas!

That looks like a great set-up. I use that NRGS kit alot, in fact I feel kind of naked in the bush without it. It is handy having it all right there all the time.

Blind Horse Knives recently donated five of their Tiger Knapp neck knives to my wilderness ministry and I'm in the process of setting four of them up as neck knife PSK's. I gave one to a good friend here.

I'm glad you found the concept useful, it really has worked well for me.

Agreed, great set up! And Pict, thanks for the YouTube vid showing your kit. Now I want to put one together, the question is do I use my Izula, HEST or RC-3? I already neck carry my Izula everyday no problem, I think for a woods neck carry kit I might be able to go a little bigger (Hest, RC-3).

thanks mac
for the great vid. really did like yr set-up, obviously since i took it and ran!
yeah the nrgs looks like a great knife. talked to newt a few times and have one on the way.... in the meantime, the izula works quite nicely!

BHK are good people. They have the same basic principals as ESEE about great hard working knives.

The Izula is a great knife for such a kit. It is a bit smaller than the NRGS but that's not a problem. I carry this kit paired with a machete 90% of the time. I wanted a knife that did well what my machete does poorly, fine detail cutting, pointy, etc. The Izula fills that bill very well.

one of the reasons i went with the izula, it is smaller than the nrgs and other esee models. for neck carry, i really want a smaller knife. there are always larger knives in my gear.

nice kit :)

I've been carrying a very similar setup for awhile now- same reason, if push comes to shove and I get separated from my pack I've got things covered at least minimally

a few suggestions- yeah get rid of one of the blades; for needle/fishing line I take a section of coffee stirrer, seal one end and drop my needle(s) into it and then seal the other end (a little heat from a bic and needle nose pliers does the trick)- then simply wrap your fishing line around it- you definitely want to use the newer spectra line (spider wire, etc) that is out there- not mono- mono twists terribly, the spectra doesn't and for the same diameter you get much more #- I use 30# spectra that is roughly the same diameter as 6# mono

needlespectra.jpg

I would consider adding some cordage to your kit, doesn't take up much extra room- I use smaller diameter Spectra cord- it's ~ 200# and like 550 has a braided outer w/ inner cores- can use to help w/ the construction of a debris shelter, carry your water, etc, etc

for water I found the MRE hot beverage bags to be pretty sturdy and they hold 16 oz- sturdier than a milk bag IMO

your correct fire straws will take up less room and be handier to use- tinder tabs are a good alternative as well

you guys got some great set ups there!
love the DIY concepts. I use a survival necklace of sorts...I'm used to it over the decades of hanging stuff off my neck...but others say it would bother them.

great kit!
cool on the fishline idea, tho i do not use monofilament. it can really become a mess quickly. there is nearly 6' of 550 cord doubled for neckstrap, and of course the inner strands. as for the mre bags, leads on where these can be purchased?

thanks for the info and pix/description of yr kit
