Izula sheaths: Aftermarket?

I've had some scraps of leather that is a bit thin and stretchy, but I tried out a simple sheath design (not one stitch is the same length as any other ... ouch).
I did form it with warm water, nearly dry now. If I could get it to be a little bit harder, it would actually work ... (but not look cool)

I thought of doing something like that. Did you consider dipping it in hot wax and forming it? Should turn the sheath hard.

Form always follows function. :)

Be careful how hot the wax is before dipping that sheath, if its too hot the leather will "cook" and shrivel up. You'll end up with a leather jalapeno. I'd use a low melt wax like beeswax or similar, and mix a little neatsfoot oil in, just a few drops will do.

If your not comfortable with wax you might try gluing several layers of the leather together with contact cement effectively making a stiffer sheath. That will cure the stretchiness as well.

Hope this helps a little.

I thought of carefully heating the sheath and melting some wax. I've got some beeswax.

as for glueing leather, I thought of that, but at the moment that little piece of leather is all I have. - Which also means I have to be extra careful with the heat.

By the way, the welt (hope its the right word, if it doesen't make sense: the small strip of leather that keeps the knife from cutting through the seam) fits great, I could punch a hole into the sheath and use it to carry the Izula upside down. That way, the softness wouldn't even bother me, but I just want to shove it into my pocket ...

OK. Not really fit to be shown, cause this is my very first attempt at making a leather sheath and it was more of testing the concept, stitched together in front of the screen. No photo, I just put it onto the scanner.

Very low profile, tight fit, and with hot wax treatment reasonably hard.
In fact the fit is so tight, I could really use it as a necker sheath.

Not a beauty though, but I think it is worth getting some better tools and suited leather.

yo Dylan... are you making any sheaths at all right now?? i remember you saying that you broke your press...

if you are making some, i would also love a sheath for my Izula..:D

Thats not bad at all! :D First sheaths are never pretty show pieces.

Welt is the correct term for the strip of leather that protects the blade from the stitches. :) Getting one to fit right is half the battle.

Ideedy. Got my press fixed so now I'm back in bidness. Homeboy that fixed it for me dropped it off last Sunday. I wa so happy to get it back, I made a sheath for every custom I had and damn near ran myself out of kydex. It was fun getting back in the saddle. Wife wasn't too happy about it though. I didn't really see her other than at bedtime for two days. Made something like 12 or 13 sheaths.

 I've spent two hours searching my Izula today ...
with that slim sheath the profile is so low, I lost my knife underneath a letter ...

Low profile knife and low profile sheath equals easy little bugger to lose! I keep burying mine under leather scraps! :p

Hi!
Short introduction of myself: My name is diak from Germany, reading here for a while, seems to be a great community. I´ve got an RC-4 and a Izula, feeling naked when I dont´t wear at last one of the two :)

In the discussion of Izula sheaths I just wanted to show the one I made yeasterday. Wasn´t very lucky with the original plastic toy...:D

The sheath is smaller than the plastic, with the possibility of mounting a small Molle-Lok (same size that comes with a RC-4) for vertical wearing.

It´s my second Kydex so don´t hesitate and try because it´s very easy to make!

Sorry for my english, but now I´m on the way to a RP Number :D

Good Job my friend! That looks great.

Just spent an hour in my garage, here is the result:

Izula sheath for carrying the knive in the pocket, with a drain hole.
The Ant-hole is the result of the sheath lying under some other stuff while drilling holes , I had to remove the damaged part, luckily showing the ant now

Thanks for taking a look,

diak
