I like the mini-14 better than AR platforms.

My Mini is the later version 580 series and she is dead on....and functions flawless, I have the ESEE AR lower to built but I am in no rush... I'm looking for a mini 30 next.
Thanks CD for the Desert magpull furniture for my AR

I like the newer mini's with the 1:9 twist over the older ones.

Do they still have .308 bore on mini 30? Surplus ammo I shot in mine had terrible accuracy. Like 6" at 100 yards bad.

Ruger mini 30 is 7.62x39mm and I would only purchase the 2007 & up version,Ruger revamped the whole line up, they are super sweet shooters now.

like the looks of the izula scales. got another izula with scales on the way for a psk idea i have. will see if they feel as good as they look...one issue ive had with the izula and the wraps ive tried so far-hot spots when carving or using for very long. thinking the scales may eliminate this. if not may make my own. but the scales on the hest dont cause any hot spots for me.

Sadie ,
I have found that the Scales work great for me...My wife has used pink paracord and I have moved her up to the scales as she has resisted for sometime ....until she used mine one day

Right, Can't swear to it but think the mini 30 7.62x39 I was shooting was .308 diameter (not caliber) and the surplus 7.62x39 is about .311 (I read about this later). Like I said accuracy was not good. I hope newer ones have .311 diameter to shoot surplus ammo like Wolf etc.

I see what your saying ,I'll do research before hand as I always do... Ruger is very helpful I may email or burn them a phone call

part of that is a difference in how bores are measured between USA & the rest of the world.
One measures from land to land in the rifling, the other measures groove to groove.
another problem is how black powder cartridges are measured
for example: the .303 Enfield bullet actually mikes out to .311,
.38 spl mikes at .357, .44mag/spl/russian all mike in at .429 because they were originally measured by cylinder inside diameter, not barrel bore.

Well I learned something there! I never knew where they got .44 and .38 cartridge guns from. I knew they weren't correct for bore but in all my reading I have never seen what you posted above. That must have been the diameter before they bored the blackpowder cylinder the rest of the way through. Makes perfect sense. Thanks a lot!

not a fan of the mini.

mags are expensive and only factory mags and one other brand work well.

spare parts are only available from the factory and they want you to send the gun in so they can "fit" the parts.

can't change uppers/calibers simply like you can on the AR.

has a bad reputation for the zero wandering when it's hot.

scope mounting is akward at best

sorry, i like easy to get mags and spare parts.

looking in my safe, there's *many* ARs in various barrel weights and lengths, several furniture configurations, hundreds of mags, and a couple of calibers. not a single Ruger to be found except for my MK2 "slabside".

on the Izula? it looks great. i'll get two soon. just wish that it was available in orange. BRKT's Necker comes in a bunch of colors, with a bunch of options for the scales. don't like their design as much as the Izula tho.

the early .44's also used a heeled bullet (like the .22lr), so the lead was as wide as the brass, compared to modern cartridges where the bullet sits inside the case.
IIRC, the change was made at military request to make loading/reloading cheaper and faster.
the old black powder 38/40 round mikes out at .400 (10mm)
