Hey everyone (this is semi off-topic, but I used the Izula so it's getting posted here and maybe in the WSS, this is gonna be kind of picture heavy, bear with me.),
Every year, my brother, my dad, some friends, and I drive to our "secret" location up in the mountains, to do some mushroom hunting. We've been doing it for quite a while, and there are about 5 or 6 types of mushrooms we know very well. These are, all types of Boletes, Hawkwings, Chanterells, Shaggy Manes, Shrimp Mushrooms, and Oysters. The area we go to is pretty good for these types of mushrooms, but some years are better than others. A couple times, we've gone and found numerous Boletes and Hawkwings, with a few Chanterelles and Shrimp mushrooms in there, some years (the last few) we find very few if any Boletes, and tons of Chanterelles. This year it was very dry up in the area we go, but it was evident that it had rained hard a week or so before. All the mushrooms we found were pretty dry. Going yesterday was actually a little early in the year for it but our friends had gone to a different area and done well so we thought we'd try it out.
This first picture is the view from a stopping place in the road, on the way up. The mountains that you see in the distance are my "backyard" so to speak. My house is at the base of them.
The view looking the other way, towards where we're going. There was a fire that went through there a couple years ago. The areas it burned are pretty evident.
Here's a couple pictures my dog, an Aussie named Bubba, having a good time at the first stop of the day.
As for mushrooms at the first stop... SUCCESS!!! A nice patch of Chanterelles.
Spoils from the first stop. I used the Izula to get them out of the ground and clean the dirt off the stems. Great little knife for the job.
We drove up to our Lunch stop area that's pretty close to the top of the mountain. I went off to check one of our usual spots before having some lunch. I was rewarded...
