Hey everyone (this is semi off-topic, but I used the Izula so it's getting posted here and maybe in the WSS, this is gonna be kind of picture heavy, bear with me.),

Every year, my brother, my dad, some friends, and I drive to our "secret" location up in the mountains, to do some mushroom hunting. We've been doing it for quite a while, and there are about 5 or 6 types of mushrooms we know very well. These are, all types of Boletes, Hawkwings, Chanterells, Shaggy Manes, Shrimp Mushrooms, and Oysters. The area we go to is pretty good for these types of mushrooms, but some years are better than others. A couple times, we've gone and found numerous Boletes and Hawkwings, with a few Chanterelles and Shrimp mushrooms in there, some years (the last few) we find very few if any Boletes, and tons of Chanterelles. This year it was very dry up in the area we go, but it was evident that it had rained hard a week or so before. All the mushrooms we found were pretty dry. Going yesterday was actually a little early in the year for it but our friends had gone to a different area and done well so we thought we'd try it out.

This first picture is the view from a stopping place in the road, on the way up. The mountains that you see in the distance are my "backyard" so to speak. My house is at the base of them.

The view looking the other way, towards where we're going. There was a fire that went through there a couple years ago. The areas it burned are pretty evident.

Here's a couple pictures my dog, an Aussie named Bubba, having a good time at the first stop of the day.

As for mushrooms at the first stop... SUCCESS!!! A nice patch of Chanterelles.

Spoils from the first stop. I used the Izula to get them out of the ground and clean the dirt off the stems. Great little knife for the job.

We drove up to our Lunch stop area that's pretty close to the top of the mountain. I went off to check one of our usual spots before having some lunch. I was rewarded...

We had some lunch and then 4 of the 6 of us decided to hike up the mountain and try another good spot. We found them but they were far to dry, so we left them. I'll post some views from the area for your enjoyment.

In this picture you can see the trucks at our lunch spot. Quite the steep hike up.

We decided to head back down and try out one more spot before leaving. I didn't take my camera with me, but we found the biggest Chantrelle patch of the day there. Some more views on the way down, and some cows.

My Izula resting on the final spoils of the day, not the best day of Mushroom hunting we've had, but not the worst either, and it was great to get out into the mountains.

Colorado is great. I love going to school there. I bet the mushroom hunting is even better there than it is here in NM. I'm gonna have to try it. It's pretty nice. Last year we got about twice as many Chanterelles. 2 years before that we got 2 paper grocery bags full of Boletes, and on almost full of Hawkwings. It's a great area for it.

Nice photos! I've seen those mushrooms in the mountains but other than saying "that's a mushroom" I don't know how to identify them very well so I never try to guess what is edible and what isn't here in Colorado but I would sure love to learn any good books/info you suggest?

Great pics and nice take. Now I'm hungry and jealous that what I have in the cooler won't be as satisfying as those.

I'll send you a msg. Finding wild edibles is a fun thing to know. I'm starting to learn about the plants and such in the Rockies now as well.

Odoan, are you at CSU?

I love the fact we live at the base of the Rockies. A short walk from me and I'm in on the trailhead to Horsetooth rock!

I can't wait to get an Izula and get it out into the woods to see what it can do!

Sure as heck am at CSU. I'm a sophomore this year. The house my GF and I are renting this year is pretty close to Horsetooth as well. It's on Azalea Dr. if you know where that is. You do much fishing? Maybe we'll have to meet up some time.

Those Mushrooms look amazing. I am gonna have to cook some up later today just because of those pictures.

Thanks for sharing, it is beautiful out there.

I love the dog. I got two aussies myself. Roo is four and as smart a dog as I have ever had. Boomer is 11 months, I'm hoping he picks up her smarts some where along the way. He is still a lot of puppy. Great pics.
