I don't even remember how long ago I ordered this, but J.D. started building it last fall.

It has that talismanic quality to it, visually speaking, that his best work does. 6 bar composite blade, just shy of 7" long, a slightly longish handle at 5 1/4", carved African blackwood, guard material is O1, silver ferrule, and same damascus material as blade for pommel.

Should have in hand this week.

Comments welcome.

An outstanding knife. One of the nicest daggers that I have seen. I really like the guard and would appreciate a better look at the pommel. The carved handle has a wrapped appearance.

Very interesting piece. It has an ancient look to it that I really like. I am not a big dagger fan but this knife with the carved handle and great materials that give it an organic feel. Really pleases me ... Great piece congrats my man:thumbup:

Almost a Romanesque Mid evil Quality to it...A beautiful Dagger made by one of the best makers I know....

I have had several folding daggers from Mr. Smith..all represented perfection.

STeven were the accouterments to the design of this dagger your idea? J.W.'s? or both?

Ill take it if you don't like it...haha..

STeven,

That's a great dagger. JD's damascus is always perfect. I really like the carved blackwood. The guard is also different, I haven't seen him do one like that before. Great total package.

The usually quiet Sunday on the forums sure has been enlivened by some beautiful pieces. I have long admired J.D.'s work, and this is a great example of why. I just love the carved handle, the subtle pattern of the damascus blade and the pleasing overall proportions. Congrats bro.

WOW.... knives like this, the skill to visualize and bring to fruition the vision are what I aspire to. Thank you for sharing. I really love how the handle looks like a wrapped leather handle.

Ren,

Is that not John W. Smith that you are referring to?

Ren, anyone who knows J.D. knows that you make suggestions to him concerning commissioned work, and he uses them if they interest him, or if he can remember them.:D

I requested a pointed pommel and a pierced guard in an ovoid shape. Have been friends with JD since 1995, so he has a fair idea of what I like.

Always had an affinity for daggers, long before my art dagger days. This is one fine and handsome dagger. What's got me goin' is the carved blackwood. Man, what a beautiful handle job.

wonderful piece steven-my jd smith is definately goin with me to the grave!.....ryan:thumbup:

Nice dagger. Congrats!
I especially like the damascus and carving of the handle.
JD's one of those makers who always supplies a very nice sheath
that fits the design of the knife perfectly.

Great looking dagger, STeven! Nice to see some of J.D.'s work on here. The longish handle wouldn't look right if 100% blackwood, I don't beleive, but the carved blackwood and pointed damascus pommel work great for this piece. The tool work on the sheath seems to work well with the beautifully carved handle, which Kevin alluded to. Awesome package!

Every maker of note ends up having signature works. Although they often have a range of pieces that are remarkable, one style becomes unmistakable.

J.D. Smith will long be remembered for his daggers.

A brilliant interpretation of your guidelines, STeven.

A pleasure to behold.

STeven,

I can speak from experience that this statement is 100% true. When JD finishes the knife I'm always happy with the final results. He has his own unique style.
