And IMO, an improvement on the heavily fullered and sometimes apparently "upside down" blade designs of some of the German swords that I have seen pics of. That brief period in our history from say 1800 until after the Civil War saw some incredible examples of the cutler's art both in design and execution/ornamentation before knives and swords were replaced as sidearms by mass produced repeating firearms.That was my first thought as well.
