James K. Mattis Memorial Knife

If/when we figure this out, could we start a new thread with ordering info so I don't miss out on it.

I like the wee pen knife idea. Actually, anything that is done tastefully in James' memory works for me.

I would have gone for that puukko in a minute, but I understand about it being a major production problem, which could derail the whole idea.

The "wee pen knife" from Camillus would be a good copy of one of James' own showpieces. It would be like going back to his website for the moment, every time I used it.

Good choice.

hey,

is this going to be a reality or what?

I hope so!!! I also see another alternative. I would like to be able to order knife I like from Chai Cutlery (I am sure they still have some stock they would like to get rid of) then have it sent for engraving..

This way some peole could buy puukkos, some other knives and in the end we would help Mattis´family as well.

What do you think?

I think the remainder of Chai Cutlery's stock should definitely be made available to forumites, either at James' prices or auction style. This would help out his family, charities (of course the Karma cut would still apply), and be meaningful to us all as well. This, of course, is assuming that Chai Cutlery will not remain in business - something we don't know. Either way, it's a business decision to be made by people other than us. I still like the idea though

count me in. my heart says "puukko" but my head is sensible enough to realize that a wee pen knife will be more easily and practically done.

OTOH, that new bagel-slicer PhiL has a pix of....would that be better in ATS-34 or ?? LOL

you're right, guys, James would've laughed aloud at that.

and regardless of what my heart and head might be arguing about, what i'd be most interested in would be what Toni wants. i agree, let's give her some time, and then whatever she decides on, i'd be delighted to own and contribute a Karma Kut for.

Those who are interested in a knife project associated with James might want to take a look at this thread in the Himalayan Imports Forum. It’s not a “memorial knife” per se, but rather the result of a project that James was developing with Bill Martino of HI. It’s sort of a Nepali variant on a puukko/leuko. I think that Bill has already cleared this project with Toni Mattis (or at least gotten permission to use James’ name). It may not take the place of a true memorial project involving a charitable contribution, but it’s kind of nice to see one of James’ projects come to fruition. I just wish he could have been here to see it…

I asked his wife, Toni, if I might use his name in association with this knife and she graciously consented...

See the original thread that Jim referenced for specs and more details. Bill did ask that I mention there is a considerable wait list and anybody who signs on should be prepared to wait 2 to 3 months.

Small spelling correction for leuku

I just want to tell you that this knife looks like LEUKU the name is not leuko. James knew how to write it(the reason that I correct this). Leuku is a knife of Lapp people in northern Finland, Norge, Sweden and in Kola peninsula. Most leuku makers are Finnish so it is sometimes called puukko although it is a knife type of it self. As James many times mentioned puukko is woodcrafty knife but leuku is more like a survival knife for nomadic reindeer herders. Meant to butcher reindeers, make shelters, cut firewood (tundra birch is so small that a leuku with 15-25 cm blade is enought - one does not need an axe) and handle what ever needs they had for longer blade. Lapps had a smaller puukko for more delicate work.

This JKM leuku looks really fine. I belive that this is just the leuku/puukko James wanted it to be. Great work Uncle Bill and HI.

Had own spelling corrections

Well, now that you explain the knife's history, or origins.... I feel like I gotta have one of these.

Nice job HI!!!

OBTW, Tommi, what do you think about the scabbard that was made for the HI Leuku, JKM-1? In regards to the traditional sheath/scabbard.
