I recently purchased a Spyderco Standard serrated in an auction from seller "silverladdie" whom I believe is James Parker of Parkers' Bulldog Brand, since that's what his e-mail address states. The auction clearly stated that the knife in question is mint and brand new. When I received it, at least 40% of the G-10 was discolored almost orange in some places. I contacted him by e-mail and received a very condescending repsonse. I tried washing it with dishsoap and hot water as well as WD-40. Mineral oil doesn't cover it up and in fact, since I've applied the mineral oil, I can see that the discolored spots have worn some of the texture off the handle like it's been melted. I've been nothing but patient and polite with him, yet he has become very hostile towards me and has even gone so far as to state that he has another but won't exchange it for me. Here's a transcript of our conversations for anyone interested:

ME: What is this stain on the side of the knife? I've tried dishsoap and hot water and wd-40. I'm afraid to try anything else without knowing what caused the stain. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

HIM: Sorry, but I don't know what you are speaking of. It's the G-10 material, it hasn't been used or carried in any fashion. Sorry, I just don't know what you are speaking of. Have a good day.

ME: You stated that the knife was mint. This giant stain makes this knife not mint. Please advise.

HIM: Send the knife back, it's never been nothing except out of the box from the mint store stock. James Parker XXXX heritage business court Chattanooga, TN XXXXX and I'll give you a refund. For the price you got this knife for, based on an old Spyderco, you got a steal. Sorry for the "stain".

ME: Will you pay my return shipping as well? This is more than a stain - the knife appears melted or something. Thanks!

HIM: I have another one just like it, but I am not going to even offer an exchange to you. It's not brand new and over time it may have some type of coloring in the G-10 handles. The Knife IS NOT MELTED. If it's melted, you've melted it and if I get it back and it's altered more than what the photo shows, I'm not giving you a refund either. The knife was taken RIGHT OUT OF THE ORIGINAL BAG IN THE ORIGINAL ISSUE BOX. There is nothing wrong with that knife and you got a steal in it as wel. Do what you wish, send it back or keep it but don't bid on anything else of mine.

ME: So you have another that isn't melted but you won't exchange it for me? Whatever happened to customer service? This knive is obviously %^$@*!ed up and you knew it, there's no need to be rude. I've been very patient with you. I haven't asked for anything out of the ordinary. If you were a good seller, you'd exchange the knife for a decent one and just admit you made a mistake. I've had 3 opportunities to buy brand new Spyderco Standards at almost the exact same price I won yours for. Hardly a steal. I don't trust sending it back to you as I'm afraid I won't get a knife or my money back. Have a nice day.

I mean seriously, am I in the wrong here? The knife looks like the human torch held on a little too long. There's a definite change in handle texture where the orange staining is. It's smoothed over on those areas. I've never had this much trouble with buying a knife from someone. Now he says he may not offer a refund if I send the knife back? Argh! Even though he seems to sell a lot of knives, I would recommend you people not deal with this man - chances are you won't be disappointed - but if you get a lemon like me - don't expect him to fix it. He will just enrage you pointlessly.

Sure does not sound rude enough to warrant a GBU comment. He has offered to refund your money, what else do you want?

As for shipping, just ship it and get your money back and go elsewhere.....

I don't know - implying that I was lying and then wagging a replacement in front of my face and refusing it to me? That doesn't sound rude. I was pretty ticked when I started this thread. I just told him to forget about it and have since lightly sanded the handle with 600, then 1000 grit paper until the melted patches disappeared. Its collector value has been ruined, but I wasn't going to risk sending the knife back and then having him accuse me of screwing the knife up and not refunding my money. How would I know he just wouldn't keep it? Ebay is a little iffy with the refund handling.

Anyway - imagine ordering a knife that you'd been wanting for your collection - the person selling it to you tells you it's brand new - mint condition - you receive it a few days later and the black G-10 handle is all melted and stained orange - you ask the guy what it could be and just for some advice on cleaning it up - he tells you there's nothing wrong with the knife, and that you could return it - but if it's messed up, you don't get your money back. Tell me there isn't some kind of catch here. So basically he sent me a ^*^&%!'ed up knife and is blaming me for it because he wants to keep my money. That's the way it seems to me.
