dears,

noob, garage hobbyist, I'm looking at the Jantz hollow/flat grind fixture.
(got the "learn free hand grinding mantra". I agree and it's my next step)

question about the Jantz fixture :
I see the back and forth move,
the up and down, too.
Not the way to give the angle.

Could you please help/document if you have one, or used one ?

many thanks

Laurent

First, i have not used one. Watched i video of someone hollow grinding with it though. It doesn't appear to have any angle adjustment. Makes me think you would need to adjust the angle of your platen to flat grind with it.

On a wheel, moving the jig up/down will change the resulting grind angle.

On a platen, I haven't used one, but I agree that you'd have to tilt the platen.

These have been around for a while. The only people who waste the $500 price tag are newbies who don't know better. They are pretty useless. I have one in a very dusty box .... somewhere in the shop. Buy $500 worth of steel and belts and you will learn to grind soon enough.

:) "newbie who don't know better".... it's me.
To buy steel and belts to learn grinding is planned.
in knifemaking, when it's a hobby only, wasting money is very personal appreciation (but I hear your advise loud and clear).
If you are willing to sell your fixture, I'd be happy to buy it. (I'd even take the dust)

We don't do offers to buy and sell in Shop Talk.

I am going to keep it and at some point convert it as part of a machine I plan to build.
