Is it possible to get a Japanese style sword for under $300.00 that is not only good as a wall hanger? Example: It could be sharpened, and actually cut through something occasionally if you wanted to?

I dont know anything about Japanese style swords, what makes the scrapyard scrapizashi a Japanese style sword?

www.kriscutlery.com has six katana for under 300 dollars. Remember however, if you buy a 300 dollar sword... you bought a 300 dollar sword.

True...but if you are not cutting every other day (or even weekend) and are not taking it to war...

Is the difference going to really matter if you are not a hard line collector?
Or historical collector?

Paul Chen (casiberia.com) is pretty much the industry standard. Lots of katana, wakizashi and tanto for under $300. I think the best prices are at kultofathena.com. The new Raptor line is supposed to be excellent — they're made for heavy cutting with 5160 blades.

Everyone has to answer that question for themselves.

Blade shape and length of a wakizashi and they have cord wrapped handles. Since it is a full profile tang I would consider it more japanese inspired than a recreation.

I think that might be a better description. I'm not a katanaphile or anything, but even I raise an eyebrow when someone says that is anything remotely resembling a Japanese style sword.

Shop around, but buy it based on what you plan on doing with it. And yes, 5160 would be a great steel for a user sword.
I have a Swamp Rat Waki, cause I wanted something I could use, for fun, or Zombies.
I would love to collect Samuri Swords, but I just "practice" with my bokken for now. I feel I'm not ready to swing a live sword, and don't care for wall hangers.

I know what you mean. Not looking for super high quality but something I could down the occassional bush, look sword like, and not just a decoration for the wall.

try dynasty forge; ok if you don't over use it with real heavy training and cutting. Nothing in that price range will be real high quality as Triton implies.
