Japanese style sword under $300.00 ??

Shop around, but buy it based on what you plan on doing with it. And yes, 5160 would be a great steel for a user sword.
I have a Swamp Rat Waki, cause I wanted something I could use, for fun, or Zombies.
I would love to collect Samuri Swords, but I just "practice" with my bokken for now. I feel I'm not ready to swing a live sword, and don't care for wall hangers.

Nice post. Some good advice there and it sounds like you have your head on better then most of us. I wish I would have thought like that when I first got into this instead of thinking "must have sword now." :)

I remember a katana I bought about 15 years ago that was battle ready before the term battle ready was in vogue. I had the thing for about a day and swung it around a bit when the handle snapped internally. I was extremely lucky it didn't fly out of the handle as a swift tug on the blade pulled it out.

I purchased a Hanwei Tactical Wakizashi and am happy with it. I plan on getting the matching Katana when it's released. I paid $85.00 from a place called Tactical Outpost.
It's nothing fancy and is well made for the price.
You could purchase both Wakizashi and Katana for way less then $300.00
Unless you seek someting more traditional I would take a look at these.

Paul Chen (casiberia.com) is pretty much the industry standard. Lots of katana, wakizashi and tanto for under $300. I think the best prices are at kultofathena.com. The new Raptor line is supposed to be excellent — they're made for heavy cutting with 5160 blades.

+1 for Hanwei. I own a couple of their Asian line and am quite satisfied. Their practical kung fu sword is about as good as you can get outside of custom, and their budget japanese swords are quite excellent. www.manventureoutpost.com still has the best prices I've seen.
