I spent some time late tonight working on my Spyderco Mule. I have been wanting to do a Japanese style wrap on mine and finally decided to take the time to work on the project.

I used genuine black sharkskin under a Japanese style wrap.

Thanks for looking!!

I've never used Photobucket but let's see if this works for now. http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg216/bimmer1970/USNMule1.jpg

That looks good. the wraped handle goes well with the blade shape i think.

Wow! That looks amazing!

That IS impressive! Mine's currently wrapped in 550 cord, but I'm planning on re-doing it with an under and over-wrap of Type I Cord.

Looks good! Won't the shark skin deteriorate?

That sharkskin is pretty durable. The cord wrap actually keeps the sharkskin somewhat protected. It's the same as using rayskin on a katana handle then wrapping over it. The cord will be epoxy/resin soaked with 2-ton epoxy for even more durability. This will stand up to some very heavy use.

If / when the handle material wears out you just remove it all and wrap it again.

Thanks for posting my pic ColdOne!!!!

awesome! i wish i was quicker at the trigger. by the time i got there they were all gone. i hope spyderco produces more. man that wrap makes that mule look high speed!!!

keep it in some kydex and your set! perfect for edc.

congrats on one choice score!

I only wish that I would have bought another one since we could have bought two. I had a business set up for a few years where I did Japanese style handle wrap conversions on knives but when I moved to Tennessee a few months ago from Florida I could not bring my shop equipment with me.

I didn't know how the Mule was going to work out but my thought from day one was to do a Japanese style wrap with either sharkskin or rayskin. It worked out to where I didn't need anything but a few hand tools for the job. A bench grinder would have been helpful to mold the sharkskin to the tang but I just sanded the edges by hand before wrapping it.

That wrap is such a good idea. Well done.

Seems like ray skin would also be a nice alternative.

Do you just brush on the epoxy or is there more to epoxy applicating?

If you use a thin epoxy like West Systems epoxy and a stiff bristled brush it works well. You can just brush over the wrap and the thinner two ton epoxy will soak right into the cord. It gives you true 30 minute work time. Some of your cheaper epoxies are thicker and instead of soaking into the cord they just kind of sit on the top and dry glossy.
