Sent a damascus blade to jarod todd heattreating over a month ago says on his website it in process but when I email him I get zero responses after 3 trys my client is getting pretty annoyed he paid a pretty penny for the billet from ads I've used jarod in the past with good communication and results anyone else here having the same issues

I have had similar experiences with Jarod, I always have gotten excellent results from him. I don't believe he makes grantees on his turn around but a month or so is normal. Most of the time I get my stuff in 2 months from him.
As a general rule, I allot 2-4 months when subbing out heat treat. Peters is the only service ive tried that has been usually quicker but they torch straighten.

A month or two is to be expected on a good day.......
during covid most places would make you cry for the time waited.

Tell your client that the short wait will be Worth it.

Sorry it took a bladeforums post to get my attention. I hope you got my text. We got email swamped during the time we where closed for December. I have been trying to make my way through them. Your blade is done and will ship out tomorrow.

Yes it’s just my wife and I doing this. With a baby and a full time job we are trying to get blades out as fast as we can. I heat treat before and after work every day. Thank you for your understanding and I hope our quality of service makes the wait worth it.

I have a question for you David - I have some Magnacut kitchen knives to send to Jarod, but I've not used Magnacut for tall, thin knives like that. Do you grind them post heat treat (which I expect is a bit of a pain) or pre -HT?

If pre, how far do you take the edges down before sending to JT for HT?

thanks

Bill

Post heat treat. Especially for thin kitchen knives.

Crag - that's what I typically do with most kitchen knives, including the carbon steel ones I do myself....but I'm told Magnacut is tough to grind post HT and harder to finish which is why I was thinking of grinding to like 220 pre-HT...

keep in mind if your grinds are uneven (or perfectly even) the blade may want to warp, and if there is not flat surface area JT wont be able to use his press to straighten.
That leaves you with peening or over clamping during temper to straighten.

It is also a pain to grind thin stock when it is annealed, unless you are using a backer board, the blade bends to easy.
