Blades, stitches and hot coal...a good time was had by all! Here's a few pictures from the two week class Intro To Bladesmithing taught by Jason and Burt.

We started off the week with Haley's Journeyman cut and bend test... Yes, she passed.

Class got rolling with Jason Knight showing all his Jedi forging techniques. A team effort by Adam and Jason to pass on the receipie for success in heat treating..

A heat treating demonstration, followed by a cutting and bending demo with Adam...

By the end of week one, everybody was forging some sweet choppers...

Pretty cool looks like a good time had by all. Thanks for sharing.

On week 2, Burt foster shows up to take over the action...

We have forged, ground, and heat treated some very sweey blades at the school and with our gracious host, Bill Wiggins in his nearby shop.

There are some finished and VERY SHARP blades by this time. Tommy, one of the very promising young bladesmiths is attempting the 1 inch rope cut when he looses his footing and gets his leg in the way of a very powerful slice!

Time for a hospital visit... He handles it like a champ and proudly shows off his wickedly sharp new knife to the medical staff (one of whom is a fellow forum meber) while they administer 30 staples to close up the giant wound!

This has been a great class, with great instruction. We will be sorry to leave all the good friends and excellent hospitality of the Haywood community college.

Hope you all enjoy the pix.

More later.

Adam & Haley.

Great pics!!! ... and OUCH on the blade thru the thigh chop!!! Hope that wound doesn't keep Tommy down long. :D

I got the heebee-jeebees looking at the cut picture, I imagine it would have looked pretty nasty before being tended!...took it in his stride though! :D

That sure looks like a lot of fun, hanging with Jason and Burt. I haven't had the chance to meet you Adam but I'm willing to bet you're a bit "off" if you run with a these two boys very often. I'm sure all the students in attendance had a great time. Excellent teachers who are both personable and talented make for some great learning. Congrats to Haley as well for her success in the chop and bend test. It's great to see more of the ladies getting in on the fun.

Thanks for the great pics. I had really hoped to attend the school, the teaching line up was phenomenal, and having the DesRosiers there would have been bonus. Timing was bad for me.

Sorry about Tommy's incident, but it looks like he had a good time regardless.

Wow!!! Sounds like a real wild couple weeks! :)

Congratulations to Haley for passing her cut and bend!

Holy crap Tommy, that cut is really something. I guess since you're in pretty close quarters to the femoral artery up there, it could have been a lot worse. Hope you heal up quick!!!

I'd love to see pics of the blades everybody worked on! That little integral (?) Haley is holding looks sweet.

Glad your leg didn't suffer more damage. One lucky man indeed. Oh and how dare you post photos without one showing the carnage before it was fixed up!

Edited to add: It was a pleasure meeting you fine folks, even under those circumstances.

Wow. Sounds like a great couple of weeks.(minus the injury).

Congratulations to Haley and I noticed what looks like an integral too.. Looking forward to seeing that one.

Thanks for the pics.

Haley, I like the amount of return you got on your test blade. That shows something went right.
Tommy looks strangely happy in that photo.
You all deserve each other.

must've been an anxious moment or two, but it sounds like a real success occurred. Hard to go wrong with that much talent in the shop.

Tommy has got some serious bragging rights with a scar like that( Hey guys, look at this one!). Adam, you are a lucky man to have a lady that can forge like that:thumbup:. That integral is way cool!

Congratulations Haley!

And that's serious OUCH!!!!! that Tommy got there! Glad it appears to have been taken care of properly and I am guessing he will just have a big scar in the end.

It sounds like the class was a pretty good time except for Tommy's rope cut.

The Haywood Community College facility is a super place to teach bladesmithing. It is located in a beautiful area of North Carolina.

Looks like a great time for sure:thumbup:

Congrats on the Test Haley:thumbup:

Sorry Tommy got Hurt. Thankfully not serious!;)
