Hi,

I am just coming back from the Reno ABS show (simply the best show I've ever been to, btw), and I got to discover a young smith whose work impressed me quite a bit. It must have impressed some purveyors too, 'cause they bought 3 of his 4 ivory bowies. Anyway - his name is Jason Knight, he's from South Carolina. Does anyone know him? Is he a JS?

Thanks,

JD

I don't know him, but I can tell you he is a JS. I've admired pictures of his knives, but never had the opportunity to handle one in person. Here's a pic of one of his bowies from bladellery.com.

Do feel free to tell us all about the show - wish I coulda been there!

Cheers,

Roger

Joss, Gus introduced me to Jason at last years blade show. He had his wife and infant with him; A REALLY NICE COUPLE! Fantastic fit and finish! He had won "Best New Maker" at Blade Show West in 2001 WITH HIS FIRST FINISHED FORGED BLADE!!!!!!!!!

He has been talked about on here as one to watch.

I did not know he was journeyman yet...

Anyway, I introduced him to Amy Hinchman and she loved his work and pointed out his look.If you don't know what I mean...well, never mind.:)

His e-mail is KnightKnives@earthlink.net

Talked to this young man at the ABS Show in Reno on Saturday. In fact talked to him at length.Great maker and a JS.Had a real cool"Bolo"style bowie that kept calling to me.Had too many other commitments.
All I can say is Jason and I are going to do a little business.:)

I recall seeing a nice little write-up in either Tactical Knives or Blade in one of last year's issues. I just spent the last half hour going through my stack, but couldn't find it. Now I got the wife all mad since I asked her if she threw any of my back issues away!
Anyways, I recall the article being about a fighter styled forged blade with copper fittings and possibly an ebony handle. It sure was a sweet looking knife. The handle had nice looking ergonomics to it, and I remember saying to myself that I had to save this article for future reference. HAH! I'll still blame my wife, but she'll kick my a$$ anyways.

Could this be the knife you were thinking about?

Having seen some pictures of Jason's knives, I have to say that I think he has real talent.

Wally Hayes tested Jason for his Journeyman Smith stamp. Does anyone know if he has submitted his minimum of five blades to a panel of ABS judges yet?

That looks remarkably similar... I seem to recall it having copper pins instead of what appear to be mosaic pins. But the overall style is very similar. Those are some pretty sweet lines and curves, huh?
thanks for the pic

Jason actually took his Journeymans test in Oct 2002 in my shop under the supervision of MS Wally Hayes. I think it has been written in a couple of places that he was already a JS, but he will fix that this year at Blade. Jason is a fine young man and he will go far.

All I can say is that he is one of my favorite up and comers, not only for his work which is impressive to say the least, but also from his attitude. I am glad to see others taking notice of this young man.

Added later. If you are thinking about commissioning his M.S. Dagger, sorry it is spoken for :D.

Jason is a fantastic maker. He seems to be one of those guys that just plain has a natural talent for this craft. Throw in a lot of hard work and you get some fabulous knives.

He had a lot of knives at the show with a sort of "east meets west" flavor. And I'm talking about the different sides of the world in east and west, not just coastlines.

Jason said he is planning on submitting his knives this June to procure his Journeyman stamp.

He's a great one to watch!

Nick
