Jeff Randall and Tactical Knives

While I sincerely appreicate the post, please read the below post I made today on our forum

<begin post>

I had a long phone conversation with Steve Shackleford today. He is the editor of Blade magazine. Actually all of this came about from a manufacturer suggesting I pursue writing for Blade. (don't ask which one). Anway, Steve and I had a nice chat and he is willing to run my articles in Blade magazine. I will already be working on the first article during this upcoming jungle trip. Now, I'm new to Blade and I'm not sure about their scheduling and other related publishing issues are, so I'm not sure what their time frame is on publishing. I will say I really liked Steve and what he told me on how he runs a magazine. Much more "laid back" and not quite as nervous as what I've been use to. I think he and I are going to hit it off great. Another thing, I told Steve that I wanted to gradually creep into this and not write as heavily as I have been for TK for the time being. I also want to stay more focused on the type blades that are our specialty. I'm looking forward to it and I now have renewed spirit when it comes to writing. I was getting stale with TK, so maybe the unexpected move was a good thing for everyone.

Now, on to the other issue. I also had a long chat today with Shirley at Tactical Knives. Very nice lady. The reason for my call was to find out what Steve Dick planned to use of the articles I already had submitted so I could begin the process of getting any un-used stuff back for other publications. Anyway, we didn't talk too much about what had happened but I wanted her to know directly that I had no hard feelings towards TK or New York. I also told her that I would do anything I could to help the magazine continue to be a success - everything except writing for Steve Dick. The reason I'm bringing this up here is I want to ask a favor of everyone on the forums. That favor is for all of you to continue to subscribe to TK if you like the magazine, and for all those that advertise....keep it up. It's a damn good magazine and I do NOT want a pissing contest between Steve Dick and I to change anything with anyone else. I'm serious about that guys. I know I plan to continue my support through subscritption and advertising.

Shirley and I ended our conversation on a very good note, and maybe someday when some small changes are made I will once again write for them. If they want me to.

Keep the faith amigos!

<end post>

I was very upset with the way Steve treated me about the thread on BladeForums, and since my first concern has ALWAYS been to the readership I felt it was their right to know that I was basically being "controlled" on what I could even say when it didn't even concern Steve Dick or TK. I viewed is as a threat from Steve plain and simple, and as I told him, no one ever threatens me. This was my reason for taking this threat of "New York seeing the thread and letting me go" straight to New York. I don't like clouds hanging over me. If you're going to threaten then you best go ahead and make good on it because the next move is mine regardless.

I offer no apologies for making what Steve Dick did public. With that said, I'm not one to hold a grudge. Steve can get on with his editing anyway he wishes and I plan to get on with my life. I will still bump into Steve at trade shows and I know both of us will be cordial. All I'm asking is for folks to continue to read, subscribe, advertise, or do whatever they did with TK before this happened. Even though Steve is an employee of TK, it was not the magazine in my opinion that caused all of this. Steve made a bad policy decision for TK in my opinion. I doubt it will happen again and I highly suspect things will smooth over drastically from the editing department. That's a good thing. The folks in New York have always treated me very good. The bottom line to all of this is I am finished writing for Steven Dick, and until I had the pleasant phone conversation with Mr. Shackleford today, I was just going to back off from writing for a while. I like what I heard from Steve Shackleford. I like his open minded attitudes, and he struck me to be a real honorable man. I think I can bring something to Blade that will be an asset to the magazine, and if I can't I think their editor will be straight-forward with me and tell me. Instead of me having to guess. Now, before this paragraph gets twisted and out of hand. Blade did not approach me about writing. This came about when a manufacturer called me last night and suggested I go to Blade. So don't anyone here blame Steve Shackleford or imply he "stole" me from Tactical Knives. I have met Steve twice before our conversation today. He has always been very nice, a gentleman, and complimentary of my work in TK, but he has never asked me to write for him because that would not be professional. I thank him for that.

Bottom line guys is a enjoy writing, especially when it's articles that concern everyday working knives and using them in various environments. So, I will continue to read and support all publications because it's a passionate hobby of mine. Let's put all of this behind us and go forward. I will say this before I close this long post: At this point in the game, I will not respond to anyone who wishes to elevate this posting into anything than what it reads here. If someone doesn't like what I have posted...well...I'm not going to fight about it. I'm argued out. Besides I have to leave for Peru on Thursday and will not have time to defend myself after that :D Look for some jungle blade work in Blade Magazine in a future issue.

Again thanks for the support.

Jeff

BTW, Hunter, Chad, and everyone else. I sincerely appreciate what you guys have said and for your desire to stand on prnciple. I really do. My beef was with Steve Dick though, not TK the magazine. I know Steve is an agent of the magazine, but I'm willing to give the bosses the benefit of the doubt and keep my "bitch" focused and localized. I'm not trying to muffle your voices at all. Again, I do appreciate those who stand on principle. Trust me on that. I've been down this road before with much bigger folks and corporations than TK and its agents.

And I wish everyone involved a successfull life! :D :D I am friends with most of the people involved in this thread, and Trace, you rock man!

So, on that note, here is a 2002 calender to print out for your pleasure!

@Jeff, I appreciate and respect your last remarks. Point taken.

I have always liked your writing and evaluation style and look forward to reading it wherever it may be. Good luck in your future endeavors.

I guess this means your not interested in starting your own Knife Cyberzine as I suggested in a previous post? :D

oh well....

I have just finished reading the whole TOPS thread. I sure am happy to see that we will continue to bw able to read articles by Jeff, and in my favorite (along with Knife World) knife magazine to boot. This is going to make Blade even better.

Jeff, the way you stick up fot TK is admirable, but the bosses are the ones that are supposed to make sure they have the right people working for them. In the case of TK the bosses seem to have failed in this. The ultimate responsibility for that falls on their shoulders since they are the ones that seem to think that Steve Dick is doing an acceptable job. From what I have read recently I would have to disagree with them. Then again, I don't have a magazine to run.

I have gained a lot of respect for Jeff and for some of the others that took part in that thread. Other than with Cliff, I think that Jeff was about as respectful as I have seen on this forum. As far as Cliff is concerned, I have been left with no doubt that Jeff has little use for his opinions or testing methods.

I like to read Cliff's posts and always have. Not always in agreement with him, but am always impressed with the effort he puts into testing blades and his willingness to pass on what he has learned to the rest of us. I also think that Cliff handled himself with decorum in the above mentioned thread.

There are others that took part in that thread that I have lost respect for. Those that instead of adding anything of substance instead decided just to attack others or that decided that aggression and posturing would somehow get their point across better. All it did as far as I am concerned is make some people appear to be a horses ass.

I have just been reading all that happened and so excuse my belated comments. I'm going to miss Jeff Randall's articles in TK, one of the things I looked forward to every couple of months, but am very glad to hear he will be starting to write for Blade. Jeff, along with a few of the other writers for TK, have been a source of tremendous inspiration and learning. No, I am not at present a hard-core outdoorsman, but I really appreciate the variety of different knives Jeff reviews and finds positive reviews for. Many are knives with little or no fanfare on these forums, but Jeff is concerned only with how these knives actually perform, and often in the most extreme circumstances, instead of the status of a certain knife.

Mr. Randall, in these days it seems that men with your principles are rare, but thankfully do exist. Thanks for sharing your experiences and opinions, glad to see things are moving in a better direction for you, and continue with the great work!
Jim

To say that Jeff Randall is a rare example of principle and strong moral fiber is laughable. To repeatedly profanely insult a man you do not know becuase he has brought up a valid but negative point about your buddy is terrible. It was not brave and just, it was immature and petty. He deserved to be fired.

I just spent the better part of the night reading through the now infamous thread and this one (four hours of my life that I'm never getting back...:p). I just wanted to say that while it took forever, I learned a helluva lot about people in general and the knife world. I came away with a deeper respect for Mr. Randall and I wish him luck in the future. I've been a TK subscriber since '96 and just recently started a Blade subscription so I'm glad to hear that I will still be able to read his articles. Mr. Randall--I think you got shafted big time, but I'm glad to see that it hasn't gotten you down. I only wish I could take that kind of punishment and keep smiling...:D

Jeff is doing something that all exemployees are advised to do. DON"T BADMOUTH YOUR EX-EMPLOYER and burn down bridges....

Mr. Randall, good luck on your writing career. I have also enjoyed reading your articles. I also disagree with what has transpired between you and TK knives(Steven Dick), but you chose your own medicine, and now you will have to suffer the consequences whether they are good or bad.

This is where I disagree with you, and since the infamous "Tops" thread was closed before I got to post to it, I will address it here. You have belittled Cliff to the point of being ridiculous. Cliff and you are on different sides of a fence the way I see it. Cliff does it his way, and you do it your way. I, for one, appreciate what Cliff does for bladeforums. You or other makers and manufacturers may not like it, but Cliff is here, and you all will just have to live with it. Do I agree with everything that Cliff writes? No, I do not, but I am not going to sit here and belittle him. The name calling, especially, is must hurtful to read. In my opinion, if it were a regular Joe member writing all the trash that you wrote, that member would have been banned from bladeforums. How one can get away with this type of behavior here on bladeforums is prejudiced, and that, my friends, is the exact reason I will not buy a Gold membership. Big D1

Jeff

My first post on the whole subject.

I have enjoyed your articles in TK and will, I'm sure, continue to enjoy them in Blade. Godd Luck with the change!

I will, as you have suggested, continue my subscription to TK because I respect and enjoy the writing of many of the writers - Jerry VanCook in particular.

(p.s. Rob - How about an "uncensored" copy of the calendar ;) )

Thanks!

Rob I held my tongue, but since you guys brought it up! That picture is FINE cept for the lack of nipplige, and the S&W!!! Jeeze I am gonna have to send Terrill a Glock or SOMETHING!!:barf: ;)

Jeff--I, like the vast majority here, am very glad that I will be able to continue to read your excellent articles in Blade. I might add that your attitude toward TK is very honorable to say the least.

"You're a better man than I, Ghunga Din.":D

Keep up the good work, best of luck.

Perhaps Mr. Dick would like to chime in here and give his insights.

As far as I can see, the loss is TK's. Jeff Randall will move on.

Paul

Thanks everyone. This will be my last post for a while since we are leaving early in the morning for South America and I still have some packing and running around to do before we leave.

I think that girl on Rob's calendar is suppose to meet us at the airport. You did get that arrnged for us didn't you Rob?

hasta luego amigos,

Jeff

After much consideration, I am going to close this thread. Jeff has said he will be out-of-country for a while and that precludes his participation in the thread for that length of time. It also looks like we have hit a a conciliatory point in everything so it is a good place to stop. I respect what Jeff has said here a great deal.
Maybe it would be a good idea to pause on the whole thing and bring it back up after things have cooled a bit. FWIW.
