I've been a long time reader of Blade magazine, but recently I find myself more interested in Tactical Knives. I find the information more of practical use than the artsy stuff in Blade. As a bonus, people like Bearthedog, Joezilla, and Jeff Randall are frequent contributors. A while back, Jeff Randall wrote an article about the Escape and Evasion kit that he carries in South America which consists of a waterproof container, a RAT folder, and a Inova X5 flashlight. Jeff recommends a button compass, small leatherman tool, lock pick, small tube of camo paint, saw blade with handle, small roll of piano wire and regular wire, a signal mirror, small roll of tape, sewing/fishing kit, small bobbin of nylon thread, automatic center punch, standard handcuff key, phone card, cash, fire starter, tinder, condom, aspirin, bandages, alcohol wipes, gauze and survival cards.
I found Jeff's kit intriguing but I really don't need an E&E kit in Upstate NY. After reading the article, I spent time with one of my wood badge patrol members camping in the Adirondacks. He is a very experienced military professional and outdoorsman. I noted that he also kept some of his wallet/kit in a waterproof container and thought I should adopt Jeff's idea to my locale.. Since then, I have been carrying a similar concept in my Carhartt, so here's mine:
Mine is a waterproof container, Trekker, and an Inova X5 (Jeff is right about these lights!). The container is wrapped with some cordage and a little tape and contains an Opinel, tweezers, lighter, fishing/sewing kit. aqua tabs, a condom (Hey, you never know), bandages, compass, lens, fire steel, one of those absurd one hand flint fire-starters (a lighter flint w/o the lighter..), an Inova keychain light, and a bunch of other junk..
In any case, I think that Jeff has a strong concept here.. Anybody else carry anything similar?
