Jeff, what magazines do you regularly write for?

IMO most of the issued gear is really pretty good.
Not much of it is the BEST out there, until you get to the electronic gear.
But even if it isn't the best, usually the only real complaint is the weight.

A few abortions, like the Gen 1 MOLLE pack frames. I remember going back to the Lg ALICE because the Gen 1 MOLLE wouldn't survive a jump. I bought one of the new Gen 4 frames and put an SDS 10th Mtn ruck on it (it's one single bag that is about the same volume as the two spearate bags on the standard MOLLE kit), and it's actually a really nice pack. Much sturdier than the Gen 1 and the single bag doesn't shift around as much.

I went through the Nalgene bottles, Stainless Nalgenes, other boutique bottles, and I'm back to my GI canteens -- I prefer them and the cups to the neweer kit.

I do get a kick out of the guys that buy military gear to pretend they're military, especially when it's not in their interest. Such as: when we went to war in the middle east, guys in rainforest type climates (i.e. very, very GREEN, areas) that HAD to run out and outfit everything in Coyote tan and desert cammies.

Now I do have to admit, I LOVE my poncho liner, and field jacket liner!!!

Oooh, forgot about them. GI poncho is still my favorite. I like my poncho liner so much I use one as a blanket on my bed. My M65 jacket is still my favorite jacket -- I even have an M51 arctic parka from my days up north, anyone remember those?

Don- So I had to look up your "Force Recon Survival Kit," seems like good shit, and cheaper than dirt has 'em for $60, might have to pick one up.

Cpl-Hell yeah! The GI Poncho, some bungee cords and 550 cord, and you got yourself a tent in 4 minutes. That is still one of the simplest and lightest ways to pack a tent. I have a [URL="http://www.seatosummit.com/products/display/6"/URL] that I carry now. I try not to look former-military, too much.

LOL dude I am still laughing! That is so true, I got out of the Marines, friends wanted to go camping and stuff, and I turned them down everytime for like a year. I finally went with my brothers and dad a while later and it was like "oh yeah" no I remember why I thought it would be fun in the military. Now I hike, camp and rock climb as much as I can.

Sorry had to add the guns: never has anyone avoided shooting fully automatic weapons except in the military because you know how much of a bitch it's gonna be to clean that weapon after you put those thousand rounds of BLANKS through it. Anyone else bury ammo in training?

That's my oldest sons opinion now. He is in the field near the border of Syria. 2 days in the rear and anywhere to a week or 2 in the desert at a time.

I'm quite fond of my poncho liner and M65 field jacket (which we were never allowed to wear:grumpy:). Spenceds, I was the same way about camping for about two years after I got out. Didn't want anything to do with it

Hell yeah, especially after being out there in the swamps of N.C. I hate Lejeune, but Wilmington was a nice area. Totally different going from swamps to working at a yacht club.

I went from E-1 to E-4 twice, mostly due to my insistence on using logic and reason in a place where such things were viewed as being only slightly less offensive than homosexuality and facial hair.

There you go "thinking" again, damn't what did they tell you about that. Yeah rediculous, totally sets you up for failure I believe.

Kifaru makes a 'woobie' that is even nicer than a regular poncho liner--warmer and lighter. I've used it as a blanket in warm weather camping. Keep it in the truck as an emergency blanket. It's about 10x more expensive than a GI poncho liner, but that's what happens when you don't go with the lowest bidder....

My roommate has a kifaru woobie, awesome piece of gear just can't bring myself to shell out the cash for one, but I probably will eventually

Don- yeah I read that article almost all the way through before I realized you wrote it, good stuff!

I know. :)

Thanks! That's the only article on that kit on the Internet.

I missed the compliments about the website guys, thank you. :)

Spencer, thank you too! I forgot that Cheaper Than Dirt had the USMC Kits and it was easy to forget because they wanted $100.00 a piece for them months ago. At $60.00, they are an excellent buy and FedEx Ground Boy just left a half hour ago and guess what I have on the table in the dining room? ;)

Jeff said he ordered one yesterday in another thread. Thanks a lot for the heads up on that one.
