This maybe should go in the Customs forum, but I figured it would get more exposure here. I am a huge Jeremy Roberts fan. Have been since my first El Patron a couple years ago. I now have 3. A Wharncliffe, a large non-flipper, and now a large Gen 3 flipper in PD1. I have seen his work evolve and refine. I have to say that his new Gen 3 flippers are outstanding!! The work he does for a one man shop is nothing short of fantastic. In an e-mail to Jeremy the other day, he advised me that he has a 20 month backlog. While that is a very long wait, I think it speaks volumes about his quality and his attention to perfection. He refuses to compromise and move into the mid-tech category just to speed up production. I'm NOT saying there is anything wrong with mid-techs, I own a TON, but to buy a one person, handmade knife, from a one man operation for $750 is a great deal.

If you haven't checked out Jeremy's work, you should.

Anyone else have an El Patron?
What are your thoughts on them?
Do you like the new Gen 3 with the steel lock bar insert?

I was fortunate enough to get on a list for some Lefty flippers that Jeremy recently made. They are super heavy duty awesome quality pieces of work. It was a long wait for these but this was known up front. Jeremy was always very responsive & open to all of my inquiries.

I thought he does make mid techs considering his model 4s are not handground. Are all of his El Patrons hand ground? There are many different definitions people have for midtech but to me a knife needs to atleast be handground to be custom. That doesn't mean there can't be handground midtechs either thou. I have been considering an Elf Patron for quite sometime and will likely get one. I would certainly like to learn more about his knives from people that own them.

You do bring up a good point about what makes one a custom over a mid. There are many thoughts. I base my opinion on the fact that Jeremy does his own work. He makes the knife start to finish, as I understand. I look at a mid tech like a Hinderer production. The knife is made by various folks in a small shop. Granted, Rick does some hand ground customs, but the majority are "production" models. Jeremy also will and does take orders for a custom design.

Jeremy only recently went to CNC for his handles. They used to all be hand cut and ground.

I am currently using a Gen 2 El Patron in 3V.....

I have used soooooo many knives production/custom, and the El Patron in my opinion is the best balanced EDC on the market today if you factor in all the variables.

Jeremy does it all as a one man show, and he deserves the credit he is getting. His focus was to make a very useable but tough as hell folder, and I think he accomplished that goal....

JR88FAN, I agree on your assessment. My latest is PD1 steel. This is my first knife made in PD1. If it's near as good as 3v, I will dig it. :-)

BTW: I believe your sig line is 3V. Am I correct?

I really liked the El Patron until the Gen 2/3 models with the extended ricasso. The tanto grind models look fantastic and the recent bowie blade for the PDW collaboration was quite nice as well.

I have three El Patrons. I like everything about the gen 3 except the standard blade shape on the flipper model. The gen 3 loses a lot of edge compared to the original.
