Jerimiah Johnson Knife

In the early 1980s his body was dis-interred and moved to Cody, Wyoming. Johnson is now buried at Old Trail Town in Cody, Wyoming with several other local old west characters.

My screen saver:

His last resting place and monument at Trail Town, out by the rodeo grounds. Pic taken this last October 2006. On the edge of a canyon containing the Shoshone River. The jewel in my road trip was finding out that there actually was a Jeremiah Johnson.

A woman, who works at Buffalo Bill's Historical Center in Cody, was in attendance at the re-burial said that it was the largest funeral in the history of Wyoming. Robert Redford, among others, was in attendance. Afterward, many drank champagne at Buffalo Bills $100,000 bar in Cody.

Great info guys.
Bladeprince, I know exactly how ya feel. I was not born when the movie came out, (by the way i think it was 71), but anyways this movie makes me want to just go out to the woods with a "50 caliber hawken" and have some fun, (thats gettin kinda hard though up here in MA:thumbdn: I also believe I have seen the movie close to 30 times. The movie is truely inspiring if your a woodsy guy, which i definitely am, and i believe most of us here on bladeforums are.

John Nelson Cooper made the knife, Jody Samson told me so years ago....

JNC, also made the knife Clint Walker carried in "The Night of the Grizzly".

Here's a good read if you haven't seen the movie Jeremiah Jouhnson.

No mention as to who made the knife.

The way that you wander is the way that you choose.
The day that you tarry is the day that you lose.
Sunshine or thunder, a man will always wonder
Where the fair wind blows ...
Lyrics, Jeremiah Johnson's theme.

If you have't seen it, watch "One Man's Wilderness" by Dick Proenneke, he filmed himself building a cabin in Alaska by hand in the 60's.

Talk about tought work!

Jimbowie, is that Hawken a Thompson/Center?

How's it behave? And what do you find is the best load, in terms of accuracy? What kind of groups do you get?

(Sorry for the thread drift. As you were, gentlemen.)

Quote from The Last Confederate "The real knife is in the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, WY and has been autheticated."

Shoot! I"ve been to the museum in Cody twice, but have just recently become more deeply interested in knives. I spent most of my time looking at the guns & missed (or didn't take note of) the Johnson knife. Do you know if its on display to the general public there ? Has anyone had a chance to actually see it for themselves ? - BTW everyone - its a Fantastic museum - ya gotta go there if you get the chance.

Thanks

P.S. - - How many of us sometimes think we were born about 150 years too late ?!

Sort of off-topic, but does anyone have any wav files from the movie? There's tons of great quotes in there but I don't have it on DVD and haven't yet found any clips online.

I remember reading about the original and that reproduction in one of the knife magazines several years ago. It might be worth pointing out that the knife originally had a crossgaurd that eventually broke off & got lost. And the tip was probably much pointier, and got broke off and resharpened several times. (the repro's tip seemed even more rounded than the original.)

(-bump-)

great thread...
