Still seems like a lot of trouble for a steel that is fairly stain resistant in the first place.
 
My guess is that it is some sort of chemical conversion coating, an inorganic coating that alters the chemistry of the metal surface to improve paint adhesion.

I'd have to agree with this. Kinda the same idea as acid etching bare metal before painting. In the auto body industry they use primer that etches the bare metal for adhesion. Just my thoughts.

Oh, I don't know if I've posted in this forum before, but I check it regularly. I have a few knives from the Yard and Swamp. At the moment, infi is a bit rich for my blood. Hopefully in the future though...
