Jerry Fisk NLT '14 Bowie style fancy fighter

Thanks guys, the owner will see it next week and I hope he will be happy with it. I have kept him posted as it went along so I think he will be.
Lorien, I use some type of historical materials a lot. Sometimes the materials have a 'tie' to the owner and sometimes not so. But, even if it does not have a tie to the owner there is a story with the piece. I document the materials be it WTC or a cannon ball.
I just acquired most of a cannon ball that was shot by the North toward our glorious southern boys on April 15, 1864. We know this because during that fight cannons were only used one day of the battle and it was found exploded on what is documented were the southern line was. I will use that material on a D-Guard next year.
But back to this piece, it was a fun piece as he just turned me loose on it. He had a few things he wanted specifically and the rest was fun for both of us. Along the way I got to know him better which is the most interesting part of the knife world. I thank him and Buddy for the photo of such good quality.

Another insanely beautiful creation from a true master of his craft.

Mr. Fisk,
I really like your philosophy towards bladesmithing, and the knife world in general.
I read in the last Sporting Classics magazine about a big blade project with a layer for every man, woman and child in the USA. Is that the D guard, cannonball piece you are referring to?
Regarding the subject of this thread, very beautiful bowie, one of my favorite blade profiles.
Darcy:)

Darcy, thank you for the kind words.

No, the D-guard is not that particular piece. That piece will be a bowie with over 317 million layers in the 13 inch bowie blade. But the cannon ball will be with that piece as well for the civil war part of our country's history as will be something from each of our wars, from bridges, statue of Liberty, buildings, planes, T model cars, gun parts, RR Spike were from the location were Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil, many types of steels all come together. Part of the handle will be from the last tree that George Washington planted which is why I started with 13 pieces of steel and it will be a 13 inch blade, one for each colony of our beginnings.
Lots of other stuff involved with the making of this knife. I am cutting snippets off of the end of the billet of Damascus occasionly as I go along so the client can have those too as a progress thing if he wishes. Not trying to hijack the thread, just answering any questions.

The D-guard will have civil war items used in the steels and with the handle and will have one layer of steel for the total amount of deaths that was killed in the war that was referred to as civil. I have a nibble for a client for it but not for sure. But, it is one of those things that I feel I must make to leave a record so reguardless if he buys it or not I will make it. It will also be as nice as I can make it. I sure can't spell for squat though and can't find the spell check so y'all will have to live with that part.

Quite the achievement Jerry!
Really the whole package, as they say and great photo.
Thanks for sharing it
Dave

Drop Dead Gorgeous!! The knife, photo, sheath...the whole shootin' match is just off the charts Jerry!

Thanks for the detailed response. I look forward to seeing the photo's of these projects completed.
Darcy:)

I learn so much from the people on this forum. So grateful for that :)
Thanks for the insights, Jerry:)

Just guessing........not very!

Actually I was going to ask, since this thread has drifted off topic a bit already:p
With the layer count being that high, obviously it'll look more or less like a mono steel, perhaps with a bit of watering. Are you planning on doing the bulk of the layers first and then adding a few contrasting layers during the last few welds?
I did try and count backwards from 317 million to estimate how many folds you need to make(because I am insane, I like to do this sort of thing:D) and found it was not out of reach of a relatively crazy individual, but I don't envy you the task of getting the layer count to add up right.
Darcy:)

It would normally become one steel again pretty quick. I keep having to add more steels to account for loss due to welding scale, cleaning and snipping off the ends for the client to look at if he has time to follow along with how many welds this took. For instance when I add the Golden Gate Bridge Cable I think it is 228 strands of cable so I have to add that in. By the way, do not go over the bridge for a few days. :) It is not just counting back from the 317 mil plus layers, you have to know when and how many pieces to add and get those figured in too. For instance if you add 3 layers in at about 1 million layers figure it up and see how much that changes things.
So, with you not being able to see a pattern, about 5 or 6 folds from the ending I will insert some nickel pieces, this way you will see a normal pattern.

It is a booger of a piece but I have photo records of me working on it at this stage, rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat..........at this stage.

That's about what I figured.......epic project.
Thanks again.
Darcy:)

It is not many men in their lifetime who get to see themselves as a Legend. Jerry Fisk is one of the lucky ones. We are also lucky to have our own NLT. Tommy

Well said! Jerry's notoriety has been hard earned and well deserved. Few (if any) have worked harder and done more for custom knives.

Just incredible work surrounding the walrus. This is my favorite NLT knife so far. The steel is just incredible. Thank you for letting us take a peek Buddy and Jerry.
