I received this knife in the mail today from Jerry Halfrich. As mentioned in a previous thread, it’s Jerry’s take on the Remington Hunter Trader Trapper (HTT). The original HTTs came in two sizes; Jerry scaled the larger size down to 4 1/16 for his pattern and made it a single-blade knife. I think Remington only made the HTTs for one year.

A while back Elliott had mentioned to me that Jerry was looking for new patterns so I sent him a scan that Tony Bose had given me of an HTT ad. After seeing a picture of Jerry’s personal carry HTT, I picked the same pattern

I’m very impressed with this knife by Jerry. It really flows and it seems smoother overall than the first Halfrich knife I had. It has a halfstop on the blade and the tension is just right from opening to halfstop to all the way open.

The swedged-blade is CPM 154 CM and of course it came with a wicked Halfrich edge.

I didn’t know bark ivory could come in a whiter shade and the lines in it are blue in color. The ivory flares out from the bolster to the barehead and feels good in my hand.

Jerry hand cut the double bomb shield and it’s as smooth as glass when I run my finger over the shield and ivory.

This is the second knife Jerry has made with his new etch on the blade. I'm sure he'd like to hear what everyone thinks of it.

Jerry told me he’s proud of this knife, and I’m proud to own it. I had some good conversations with Jerry and he went the extra-mile to make sure this knife had everything I wanted. He's only been making slip joints for two years now, so I'm sure the best is yet to come.

Thats a beauty.. That knife makes me want to reach into the picture so I can hold it. :D
Congrats, I'm sure you will get an awful lot of enjoyment from it..

Stunning knife:thumbup: I love the bark ivory!!! It was a good day for getting custom slipjoints in the mail, mine wasn't a Halfrich, though.

That is a beauty, Mikey! Bet you've been grinning all day!
Jerry sure makes a fine slipjoint & he is one heck of a Nice Guy! He's from Texas...just sayin'

Nice knife, Mike. Great job Jerry!! Having seen several tusks, I can appreciate that bark Ivory. The natural stress lines give the handles great character.
Does anyone know if it is necessary to stabilize bark Ivory?? I guess I am asking if there is any increased risk of cracking.

I guess I am asking if there is any increased risk of cracking.

I've owned a couple of bark ivory knives and they remained stable. I owned one for a few years and one for a few months. I can tell you this for sure...every time I enter the Gun Library at the Local Cabelas, I want to steal the tusks at the entrance:D Lots of bark on those ivories;)

gorgeous, just gorgeous.

thanks for the pics, at least I have something to look at while its raining like crazy over here.

Beautiful knife! I'm liking the ivory on this one and flair out of the scales looks great. I have a few hunters with flaired handles and find them very comfortable.

Congrats, I'm patiently waiting for my name to be called off Jerry's list!

Mike thank you for sharing your beauty with us, the trapper is my all-time favorite in a knife and Jerry has done an outstanding job feeding my love for the trapper...As everyone has commented the ivory in your knife makes you want to reach out and grab it.

Mike ,that's really nice.I like it.I think his new stamp is fine
I think it is one of the trickiest steps for these slipjoint knife makers, getting that spring action, just so.It seems on the newer slipjoint makers, this will be something that changes,as they try to perfect it.As the knife owner person, you can definitely tell, pick up on it,especially if you've had a few, from the same maker,as he is perfecting it
I handled one of Jerry's lockbacks,at the Bladeshow,& IMO,it was one of the smoothest, tightest actions on that style of knife,I've ever experienced. His knifemaking abilities are definitely not limited to the slipjoints.

Nice review Mike.

Intense Ivory,Great HTT Jerry & Congrats to both of you,
-Vince

Mike - that one is sure a beauty. As you know, i love Jerrys fine work and that is one of the nicest i have seen.
Bet you are thinking - "yep, that was well worth the wait"!!
By the way, that sure looks like it packs a lot of blade.
Enjoy it.
Rick

So Mike,You say the stress lines have a blueish hue ? Why don't you send it out here for a photo shoot :) ,I can "capture" it

Thanks for all of the nice comments. I hope Jerry sees them and I wish the scans were better.

Charlie, from what I have been told, the bark ivory is harder than the interior ivory so I don't think it's more apt to crack, but maybe one of the real ivory experts here will weigh in.

Great knife, Mike! Congrats to both you and Jerry. I had no doubt that the end result of your project would be something pretty darn special.:cool:
