Jerry, have you tested tapered tangs?

I'd like to know, too.

It's my endless curiosity.

Despite everything it's gotten me into, I still have it.:o

Tapered tangs are used on some very heavy duty forged knives. I can't think of any (machined) semi-production heavy duty examples, though.
I can't tell you whether they're used on semi-production heavy duty knives. But they are used on some (machined) full-production heavy duty knives. The Browning Crowell Barker Competition Knife comes to mind as does the Boker Plus Kressler Subhilt.

Tapered tangs can be very cool. I made quite a few in my earlier days. However, they really don't lend themselves to our designs since nearly all of our designs have an exposed butt and many have the rear drop down talons. Imagine that rear talon or exposed tang being only .060" thick!!! You'd chop one branch and your pinky would shear off like a mini gerken in a guillotine!!! Hammering the butt end of a large knife can also be interesting when the exposed butt is only .060" thick.

I also like the control that is provided when you want to regulate the balance as well as the rigidity that is maintained with a full thickness tang that has cut outs or mill outs. Tapered tangs primarily remove the weight from the butt end of the knife leaving you with few options when trying to achieve proper balance.

I'll have a drink with a side of mini gherkins.

Real ones... not pinkies.

This is cool and all, but um where is the LB TG ?

The TG got a lot of air time tonight on TWD :)

Same question here. I am afraid that the LB TG will not be released within the next two Busse-weeks as it is a 7 incher just like the SARGE :(

Hey Jerry, When you start the LB runs maybe you should put a third hole in the pommel ends. This would be to signify a lightened tang. Short of putting two identical knives on a scale to see which is lightened, you want be able to tell just by looking at them. Unless there are those who have calibrated arms and can tell be lifting. What I'm saying is if a person is looking at a pic, blades on a table whatever, there will be no way to distinguish the difference, with out PHYSICALLY handling them. Just my .02!!!

Jerry, appreciate the explanation, thanks. I hadn't considered the exposed butt, good point.

I've been considering the exposed butt a lot lately :p
I recently modded a RMD with wooden handles and thought to do it this way instead, covering the whole tang with thong hole tubing through the pommel hole:

I was going to do the same to one of my Busses. I thought it'd make a cool-looking blade more akin to bushcrafters rather than combat blades.
However, they radius or break the edge of the exposed butt, so it wouldn't look clean if I were to do that mod.

Thank you.

That makes complete sense.

And yet we didn't have to fill in the off-axis elements of the Moment of Inertia.:)

Id like to see more than just the butt. Lets see it all:thumbup::D
