- Up for sale is a great knife from a classic maker. The Jerry Lairson Alamo Bowie was hand-crafted in 2009. I bought it in 2011 and paid $750 which I considered to be a very fair deal at the time. Good luck trying to find another Lairson imbued with this much Texas (Tejas) culture and history. It was designed by the maker with input from Bob Starkey. The blade is based on historical bowie models and back in those days people knew how to make a multi-purpose knife. I would say you couldn’t ask for a more versatile design and it has served me well. The handle is carved from premium ironwood in the shape of the Alamo’s entrance arch. The tip is slightly rounded as recommended by Bill Bagwell. The balance is so perfect that the knife will stand still balancing on the guard. I don’t like heavy etching on a knife but the new owner so desires, a bit of lemon juice will accent the lovely damascus pattern. The damascus displays great chatoyance.

Although it has seen a lot of daily use, it is still in great shape and has the character of a “real” frontier knife. I never used it to chop wood or to baton, BUT (full disclosure) it has a little chip at the end of the handle, so YES, I discovered that ironwood in not indestructible. It’s a very small flaw for a great knife from a very collectable artist.
I have used this for years as my kitchen knife and it fulfills this purpose perfectly. The sheath has hardly ever been used, only fondled because it is also very well made.
Here is the original description from Bob Starkey:
