I have a chance to get a used JET JMD-15 mill/drill for $450. Anyone had experience with this one? I have never used mill and have no idea what to check for on a used one. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
my friend art summers had one. for that price i would jump on it if everything is in good shape. see if he will let you mill something and see what kind of finish it leaves and how evenly it mills. check for taper.
it is pretty much identical to the grizzly I have. check for excessive lash in the screws, bring a dial indicator and check runout and deflection on the quill bearings. Also since the head clamps to the column by flexing check around the clamp bolts for cracks. the table movement play gibs? is adjustable by half inch diameter head screws at the front and right hand side dovetails. chech for excessive sticking during travel
About the only caveat - the round column mills are ill suited to precise machining:
if you indicate something and then raise and lower the head, you will be off by a few
unpredictable thous. Would prolly matter little for typical knife making chores .
