I was given an old Jewelers drill press today, don't know what all I will have to do to get it running, a couple of belts for sure, a plug and a key for the shaft. Its not a huge machine, but interesting all the same and could come in handy for some smaller things.

Yup it is, it use to have leather belts but they were rotted so I am going to try find some rubber ones that will fit it. If I can't I will just make new leather ones.

I have seen discarded automobile serpentine belts cut to length, with a couple of eyelets (kydex sheath type) and a shoelace join the ends.

It works very well and lasts much longer than anyone could have dreamt.

The rubber belt ids much drippier than the leather belts are.
Aerosol cans of belt dressing help too.

If it comes down to it I will just use the old fan belt repair idea and tie up a couple pairs of nylons and have at it;p. I should be able to find a belt that works for it without doing that

My watchmaker's lathe uses a belt of rubber tubing about 3/16" thick. I've seen large O-rings used too. I'd bet either would work, and the lathe belting is cheap.

Here's an eBay auction that shows the stuff:

You just cut it to fit and weld the ends together by heating over an alcohol lamp or very low torch flame.

Nice score! It looks to be in decent shape, and ought to drill a very precise hole.

That looks cool. I had a larger bench drill press version similar to that given to me for my high school shop, but I was always on pins and needles with the students using it with the exposed belts. I finally returned it to the donor as I just couldn't bear the risk, nor spare the time to fabricate shrouding. Have fun with it, but be careful (as always). ;)
