some one please show me your jig for holding your knife so you can sand it.
thanks in advance
vern :confused::confused:

You don't need a "jig". Short of making a knife vise, just C-clamp the tang to a piece of flat bar stock about a foot long and stick the bar stock into a vise.

I used a piece of aluminum t-bar and some leather to protect the blade.Dave:)

Here's mine:

It's a section of 3"x5"x3/16" that I plasma-cut out to make room for the vise-grips. Stiff as all get out, and cheap!

I'll upload a picture of my fancy vice :puke: But for a long time all I used was a piece of 1x2 rock maple with leather glued to the top of it and c-clamped the blade to it. Chucked the wood into a bench vice and there ya go, super fancy cabinet grade rock maple filing jig thingy.

Saftey tip though, make sure the holding fixture extends past the tip of your knife and NEVER EVER EVER leave the blade in the jig and walk off, people will get cut/stabbed/slashed on the "unfinished" knife (ask me how I know.)

OK...here's my second generation jig :D No screws anymore...but I still use my high-tech spruce 2x4...

I have seen that vise before and it is WAY over priced. Nice but rediculously priced. Chech ebay for vises much cheaper.

Here's a picture of my sanding jig. It's a $5 harbor freight drill press vice, removed the bottom jaw. Drilled matching holes in a piece of angle iron and then covered the jaw and angle iron with leather. Just chuck it into the bench vice and there ya go.

When working on thin blades is it hard to hand sand them because of bending of the blade with this vice?

I've used a similar vice in a friend's shop, it's really mainly for sanding handles but you can add some support to sand blades. You can get a similar vise (without the fancy handles) from Uncle Als for like $70 I think.

And if all else fails, you can try using one of these for a knife holding jig. :p:rolleyes:
