jigged bone

I deleted this post, I made a comment that offended some... I was not trying to offend at all and if I did I am truly sorry.

I am going to be a bit cheeky and ask you to send me an email when you find an answer. rellery@iinet.net.au
I did a google search a couple of years ago looking for a tutorial. I found some interesting articles. One about one of the last companies to make jiged bone handles. It seems a company got some made then had moulds made to replace them with plastic. Good luck with the hunt. Keep in mind if nobody knows the best way anyway you pick will be the right way. May be a dremil or other flexi drive tool would get you started.

My plan was going to be to get some bone cut a couple of scales to shape see how they went drying out in a dry place to see what shrinkage if any.

I never got around to it.

What do you need to know about it?

Do you need to let it dry first or straight from the butcher.
Does it need to be sealed or soaked in anything.
Best type of dye or stain to have a surface colour but not all the way through so that you can have the white/light areas sanded.

Thank you

I've not used "green" bone right off the hoof but I know that it's been done. It needs to be boiled and bleached to get all the fat and crap out of the bone. Cattle shin bone seems to be what bone suppliers use and some of the best bone comes from South America because it is more dense(I don't know for sure but it may have something to do with growth hormones we use here in the states). Ofcourse, then it has to be D R Y before you use it because bone will move like crazy otherwise.

I have heard of some guys going to PETCO or other pet food suppliers to get bleached bone pieces. I picked up some bone at the local PETCO and found some pieces that would be usable.

Dying can be done using Fiebings Leather Dye. Experiment with the colors to see what you like. Clean the bone surface with acetone and then soak it in the dye for desired effect. The longer you keep it in there the deeper the dye goes...again, experiment. EVERY PIECE of bone you dye will be different. You need to dye multiple pieces at the same time to get pairs that will match up. I know guys that will soak the bone for a month, jig it, warm the bone up with a torch, soak it a little more, etc. till the desired color will be arrived at.

I'm not aware of any sealing that is required for bone. The best treatment for bone to keep it from drying, cracking, and nastyfying in any way is to rub in a small amount of Formby's Lemon Oil Treatment from time to time. Works well on stag too.

Thank you for the information. Life is funny my father was a supervisor at an abattior and my broher was a slaugrman until about 4 years ago I could have got a truck load of bones. Now I will heto go hunting.

Thanks again for the help.

I just got a infraction for saying I boned a jig!! What the hell is a jig? I was making a play on words and someone seems to think I am being racist!! This is the furthest thing from the truth! I made the word up!! Or at least I think I did.

If jig means anything bad I am sorry but I do not know what it is supposed to mean.

Nope!! Found nothing about the word except for an Irish dance and slang for a jigsaw puzzle. So, unless dancing or putting puzzles together is racist I expect this to be someone in charge jumping the gun. Next time I think an email first would have been a better choice especially when the charges are so severe, this is not a joke to me.
