Personally, I prefer smooth handle materials (wood, horn, bone) cause they feel better in my hand, and look better to my eye.
I think some jigging patterns are a bit too "rough" (when new) and feel uncomfortable, while others are smoother (even new) so they bother me less.
Old worn jigged bone is always smoother and therefore closer to my taste.
As for the pure aesthetic thing, it depends alot. I've seen some old, worn jigged bone that looked very nice, but some new jigged patterns look nice to me as well.
