Jigging phenolics

I am about finished polishing a paper micarta (Garolite actually) handle, and it turns out it's probably too smooth to be useful as a utility knife. Is it possible to add texture to the scales a la jigged bone to this material, and, if so, how is it done?

It's possible, you can just use a dremel tool and a burr to do it free hand.
