jiggly yojimbo. .. what to do? what to do?

Hello,

Just purchased a Yojimbo. . . needed an EDC knife under 3", and the price was right at knifeworks. Unfortunately, the blade is exhibiting some unsettling wiggle when locked in the open position. There is no horizontal play, and the motion is not crazy loose, but if I hold the blade and rock it along the pivot when locked open, there is definitely and consistently a jiggle.

I guess I'm wanting to know if this play while locked open is common to the compression lock or if there is a defect in this particular unit.

My less spendy benchmade griptilian, CS voyager, and wife's Delica do not exhibit this behavior and they are well used.

I owned a Yo for a while and mine was a little loose, more so than my other Spyderco compression locks (i.e. Para-military). I have found that there might be a little verticle blade play if the lock does not lock fully. This may "wear in" as the blade is opened and the parts slide together. You might try to tighten the pivot bolts.

Had a similar problem. Twisted the bolts around and kept opening and closing it and now it locks solid. I think it takes a couple of times for it to find its proper sitting position.

OK. . . I guess the thing to do if possible would be to get another liner (don't know if it can be had oversized a tiny bit) and "hard fit" it like a 1911 barrel with dykem blue. Get it to lock up like a vault. Some would call the problem slight. I'm just a bit concerned because it's new knife and I want to get it sorted out well within the warrantee period.

The warranty period doesn't expire until you take it apart yourself. If you have a problem with a new Spyderco knife, send it to Spyderco. They WILL make it right. They cannot find problems in manufacturing processes, tolerances, heat treatment, materials, etc. unless you send the knife to them. Sal Glesser wants to see problems. Sal FIXES problems when he finds them. He doesn't just send out a new knife and call it good. He finds out why it was the way it was, and corrects whatever caused it to be that way. He can't do that if you don't send it in. He's good, but he isn't pyschic.

On many compression locks, the stop pin is not perfectly round(eccentric). It can be moved to adjust lockup. I believe it was designed that way to allow the ELU to adjust lockup as the lock wore over time.

Very good then.

I will wait then for customer service to get ahold of me probably next week or for Sal or a rep from Spyderco to respond here, and we'll take it from there. I have no problems sending the blade in. . . and I will continue to exercise the the opening mechanism 'til then and it will hopefully smooth itself out.

In the meantime, I'm thinking about buying another one because I really like this knife and would like a backup if something were to happen to this one. . . I hear their discontinued. I hope another version comes around. I was very excited about this knife when I first saw it, but the ~$170 price tag was just too steep for me to beat it around as an EDC. I wish they had sold better.

have you tried to adjust it yet? It is a lot easier than sending it back to Spyderco. If you are a knife knut, you should get some torx drivers so you can allways adjust your knife.

I have never taken my knives apart and I have never needed to. I have had to tighten many of my knives. Clip screws, pivot bolts, scale screws can all loosen. It is not a defect, it is just annoying. Loose screws are part of life for a gun or knife lover. I am both so I keep my own screws tight. It is a little thing but worth doing.

I have adjusted the pivot on my Para and a few other compression locks. I was able to make one lock up better but most just get tighter when opening and closing but not in lock up. I am not a fan of compression locks and hope Sal just forgets about them and makes more liner locks. Spyderco's liner locks are some of the best fitted I have seen.

Compare my Military to my Para and there is a clear advantage for the liner lock (Military). It locks up tighter and stays closed when not in use. It is easier to open and close as well. Why they made the Para a Compression lock when they already had the Military liner lock is beyond me. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Very well said

All of my compression/frame locks developped vertical play after minor use:barf: but my Military is still rock solid:cool:
