Hi Guys,

I'm planning on making a JFCC style sword for my own use, and possibly a few I might sell. I've noticed that several makers have also made them in the past, so my question is-should I ask Mr Fikes for permission, or is the design just "out" there now?

Just be respectful and site the Cloud Cutter and it's makers(I'm pretty sure it was a collaboration between Fikes and Fogg) as your inspiration. You could drop them an email but that piece is WELL known and has had many versions made. I don't think there would be a problem.

Post pics!

Rick's right. And don't forget to post photos of your results David. I'd like to see what you come up with. Jimmy showed me a video of him testing the cloud cutter one day when we were having BBQ. I'd like to see what you came up with.

if you're going to copy someones' work it's always best to get permission, especially if you plan on selling it.

that initial design was made by Jimmy many years before the "cloud cutter" collaboration was done. They were/are called Jungle Honey's. I owned one of the originals for a time and swapped it back to Jimmys wife Maggie. Ive made a few similar cutters, very fun.

Thanks for the link Stacy as I have not seen one before. Beautiful looking blade and I can see the appeal :)

Matt, I've seen your versions of the cloud cutter, very fine work and absolutely all business blades. Does anyone have a way to contact Jimmy Fisk?

I know Jimmy will be tickled pink at the thought of someone using that design.

Email might be slow but it's his preferred way to communicate.

You can contact him here through blade forums, Jimmy Fikes username is Oleyfermo I think. Do a search he has had some recent postings.

It's good to let him know his work is not forgotten and that he has influenced many makers.

I heard a story about a jungle honey that was used in combat. The guy as i remember strapped it to his back and got up to no good with it. Eventually he had to retire the sword because everyone wanted non PC battle blades.

I knew the shape was familiar to me but at the time I posted I did not remember where I had seen them. While I was in the Panamanian Jungle , in the early 90's, I saw similar shaped two handed machetes however they were not pointed or double edged. They were chisel ground as well and seemed to cut well.

Thanks Guys,

I will contact him. I'm just waiting for a steel shipment from Aldo. Intend to use W2, which is out of stock at the moment.

I asked him for permission, and got it. I think as long as the maker is alive, you should ask, and of course give credit where credit is due.

by the way I agree with Phillip, if the maker is available to ask, simply ask him, especially on such a specific design.
