Well, well, look what Jimmy just made. This is the best Fikes ive handled, extremely well balanced, sharp, lots of little touches. There is a dragon fly pressed into the butt, there are cherry blossums pressed under the cord wrap, the texturing is like "thorns and thistles" and has a bronze color. Has a cool Japanese style temper line but Jimmy put a belt finish on the blade so you have to get the blade in the light to see the temper line well.

Its beyond sharp,If you lay this blade on your arm to "shave" hair..... YOUR CUT.

Lets hope Jimmy makes a few more! Pleas dont go calling him (as we know he HATES that), when he has knives avialable Don Fogg will post them.

Beautiful, Matt. I was just thinking about Fikes the other day. Good timing. ;)

That's a gorgeous knife. Is it forged or ground? What is the steel?

Thanks,

JD

JD, Fikes has been forging knives since 1976. His knives are forged carbon steel, dont know what type.

Blues, the knife in person is even cooler, i will post more pics later. Don Fogg took these pics, they were "quickies" according to Don.

IS THAT YOURS!!!!?????? IT'S FREAKIN' AMAZING!!!!!!!! :) I had NO idea that Jimmy was still making knives...........

Matt, looking forward to seeing the other pix.

I was just in touch with Jimmy and he mentioned that this was the first knife he's done in some time. I sent him the link to this thread, so if we're lucky, maybe he'll come on and join us in this discussion.

Myyyyy my my my...that looks dangerous to be sure!

Jimmy is coming back? Too cool, didn't think he'd ever make the journey back to knife making!

I know how sharp his knives are and I believe you!!! Thanks for sharing Matt!

Matt,

Thanks for the great post on Mr Fikes. You know I love his work,
very exciting to see him making knives again.
That knife is very nice and reminds me of how much of an artist
Jimmy is.

The ABS membership guide for 2002 has an excellent article about
the early years and alot of it concerns Jimmy Fikes. Oh, the article was written by Don Fogg. Gotta love it!!

Forgot to ask...what type of blade grind is it?
Chiseledge?

So, the grouchy old so-and-so has reared his ugly head again, has he? Don't any one of you believe a good word you hear about him. Belive me, I know his guy, and he's a definite scoundrel. Win gets ten demerits for calling this pathetic, aging hulk 'Mr'. GRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! I do all the work, Fikes gets all the credit. I've tried to teach him to forge his 1095 at a proper heat... but, Oh no... if the old fool pulls the blade blank out of the forge at sparking heat, he starts slamming away at it with his eight pound hand hammer with never a stroke from a wire brush to remove scale. "Hit it while it's hot", he cackles. At the end of the day, after the Gouch has finally left, I try to reforge the blades properly, and to shape, but I can only do so much. All my forge work is futile anyway. Watching the old fool quench at a yellow heat makes me feel ill. Sharp? Fikes wouldn't know sharp if it bit him in the butt. My poor arms and hands are arthritic from trying to put some sort of decent edge on his work... only to watch him thumb the edge after I've done my best to sharpen the thing... humming the while to himself, thinking (if you could call what goes on in his head thinking) all the while what a fine job he's done. I'm fed up. I want my share of the credit. I want a salary. I want this chain off my ankle. Hope you enjoy MY knife, Matt.

Jimmy's shop Gremlin

That is one of the sweetest blade shapes I have seen on a camp knife, ever!

my hats off to ya Oley, and since you do all the work any way i will trade you my pit bull (dont worry i knocked all his teeth out with a hammer) for a Damascus Kukri (yeah i remember pics of that one)

Seriosly though, yall dont start a big feedin frenzy, im feeling guilty already. Let the ole Master grump Jimmy make what he wants, when he wants, how he wants OR we wont get nothing....and Oley will wind up worked to a literal frazzle.;)

Oley, sorry for not giving credit where it's due.

Matt, tell me again that your going to start choppin' with that blade.
Although, you are the go to guy when one needs to be cleaned up.;)

Where's JJ?

Win

Oley, that is one awesome knife!!!! :)

Matt, I hope you are going to use that knife - half the joy is in using it - don't think you have to worry about it being up to the task!!!

If you are not going to use it, send it to me and I'll "break" :D :D :D it in for you, figuratively speaking - I promise I'll clean it up & send it back to you!!! Eventually :D :D :D

Bill
P.S. Sunrise Fighter holding up great!!! Still one of my favorites!

Matt,

Absolutely incredible knife!!!!

Oley,

Incredible story :) I have a female shop Gremlin myself, maybe you guys can get together???

I started cuttin with it before the US Mail lady had pulled out of the driveway. Gonna be in the woods this weekend chasin mean old boar hogs.

Gary- Its got the "rolled chisel" grind, or at least thats what i call it. Fikes makes the only knives i like that are ground this way.

I will have some more pics soon, got to reformat to get them online.

Interesting, is it rolled on the flat side or the beveled side? What other Fikes ideosyncracies are there? It's hard to find ant info on Fikes on the web.
