Jimping. Why?

i deal with jimping on production knives (because they almost all have it) but when it comes to customs i wont buy one with jimping as a general rule because they do nothing for me. a smooth rounded off spine of efficient thickness is alot more comfortable then jimping resembling a saw blade. just doesnt make sense to me.
