Hi folks -

I got home after work today to find a familiar box from our friend Stomper.

DSC_0924.JPG

Inside the box was the Kitchen Knife that the Boss designed and Stomper made for the pass-around.

I have to say, I don't like the direction Stomper is going with his sheaths:

DSC_0925.JPG

Just kidding - I know this one does not come with a sheath. :p

I have a few of Stomper's knives, but this one has a very different look and feel than my other JK's.

Here is a picture with a keychain for size reference.

DSC_0928.JPG

The handle has a wonderful contour and a "birds-head" butt on it, which makes it very comfortable for kitchen work.

The blade is nice and thin - Here are the specs from Stomper -

Camp & Kitchen Utility. 9 1/2" overall, 5" blade of 1/16" thick O1

Here is picture with my Survival Knife, my Kephart and the Kitchen Knife (far left).

The C&K is 1/16" thick, which makes it flexible and great for slicing.

I have already cut up some green peppers and tomatoes with the knife.

cont'd.

C&K cont'd.

Here are some pics of me using the knife to slice up green peppers and tomatoes for tonight's dinner -

The handle is very easy to grip when it is wet, and it looks GREAT! This knife has a very high level of fit and finish - just beautiful.

How thin do you like your 'mater slices?

I am loving this one - great job Boss and Stomper - I will be ordering one of these for our kitchen!

I'll be posting a more thorough review in the kitchen forum and the reviews forum, and on JD after I get some more details, weigh the knife and do a lot more food preparation with it.

Thank you, Stomper, for giving me the privilege and pleasure of being the first to get my hands on this great new design.

best regards -

Chicken breast (or possibly ribs, because those are on sale right now, but maybe I'll just do both), potato soup (gotta peel and slice them taters), and fruit salad are on the menu so far :)

By the way, did you find much of a difference between it's slicing and it's chopping motions? I know I'll get to find out myself, but man I'm just impatient! :P

Hi Noah -

I have only done slicing so far - but I have some onions waiting to be chopped.

I can tell it will be a great chopper as well (not for cutting down trees obviously), since the blade is nice and thin.

The blade is also flexible - none of my other JK's can be flexed at all, but this one, although not flimsy, does have a little bit of flexibility build into it.

I'll be posting a lot more for the next few days, this is just a practice run for today, I am building the review in a text doc to paste in later. ;)

Stomper, that is one fine looking knife! I can hardly wait! I may have to filet some fish with that baby too! mqqn, I can tell you are having a ball with the knife already but, save some for the rest of us! Ha! Ha! Nice sandwich but, what did you cut the green peppers up for? Nice job on the photos too! Later!

Hi Tom -

Good catch! I keep those around for snacking, along with cauliflower and small carrots. I was saving them to cut up when the knife arrived. Knife people are a *ahem* unique lot, and I mean that in the best way lol....

Great looking knife. I love BLTs, by the way.

Hi Rockywolf -

BLTs are one of my favorites - and I really love them best when I can go out back and pick a nice ripe beefsteak - that makes them even better!

Great review Andy. I'm sold already! :D

Jeff

Hi Jeff -

Thanks! You will love this one - I may have Stomper change my Riverwoods Companion to black micarta with red liners to match the Kitchen Knife I plan to order - I am wavering on asking for that change since I like the maple burl so much.

Either way, I think the Riverwoods companion, especially if it was done in a 1/16" thickness, will be a PERFECT compantion blade to the Kitchen knife.

I think this is a nice direction for Stomper to expand his product focus, because, at least for Maggie and I, we do a lot more knife work in the kitchen that we do out in the woods - and I'll bet that most people are the same as us in that regard.

My wife Maggie already has said that Stomper should offer a Kitchen Knife Set in a wooden block! I told her that he really does not have woodworking equipment that I know of, but there you go - this is the first knife that she really thinks she would use a lot. That's a good thing in my opinion.

BTW - I stole your idea for the picture with the water droplets - your pic of the Riverwoods Companion with the strawberries is one of the finest knife pictures I have seen - seriously! I know that there are professionals that take pictures all the time, but they all have the same generic posed look, you know, on the marble slab, with the cameo shots chopped into the picture.

Your picture had motion and a "plot" if you will, and the water droplets on the blade just really made it look great. That pic needs to get on JK's web site!

You may want to wait on changing your Riverwoods Companion, there is someting else "interesting " coming. ;) As for Jeff`s photo making it on my website, it did last week, along with here in my 2010 Models sticky.

Hi folks -

Since the local butcher was out of tenderloin rolls (??), we just bought two filets to have with our potatoes and onions tonight.

I sliced up several potatoes and a nice sweet Vidalia onion for the potatoes an onions dish (simply a little minced garlic, onion, potatoes, pepper, butter and a little beer :D ).

Here are some pictures -

DSC_1056.JPG

The knife did very well on the 'taters, and then also on the onion

DSC_1060.JPG

It chopped onion like a dream!

DSC_1071.JPG

DSC_1079.JPG

The knife is starting to develop a patina, especially after the onions.

DSC_1088.JPG

I used the C&K to cut my filet, which it did very easily of course. At least I got this one before pitdog cut up any rodents lol.....

DSC_1082.JPG

After I cleaned the knife up, I was admiring the excellent fit and finish on the handle.

She's a real beauty!

Very cool! Looks like it went through the onion like it was nothing at all

mqqn, onions will do that to a knife in a hurry! After I bought my first Frontier Folding Hunter (used from eBay) I took it camping, it was chrisened on a vidalia for a skillet of taters and onions, and it turned the blade pretty black. The Frontier had a pretty high content of carbon in the blade I guess. That sure looks like it is doing a bang up job though! If Stomper wants to make a kitchen block set of knives, we can probably handle designing a block for them, and building one! I have most of the woodworking machines to do that part! After seeing this knife in action, it probably wouldn't be much of a stretch to design the other ones to go with the set! Guess it just depends on how far Stomper wants to go with it. It's late, I'll catch you guys later!

Hi Noah -

Yes - it chops very well! Part of it is knowing how to cut an onion, but the knife did better than my serrated cutco's do in that same task.

Hi Tom - It seems like there may be an addition to the kitchen test lineup a little birdie told me... :D

My wife mentioned the block idea when I put the C&K in my own maple knife block to keep it out of danger during it's resting time here.

What I think would be really cool would be a micarta knife block.....perhaps easier to make than wood even, and it would have the added benefit of the myriad colors to choose from.

Of course that is just my own pipe dreams and ideas - I would be more than happy to just have a couple JK Handmade Kitchen Knives of my very own!

great review and pics Andy... i really like the looks of this knife...:)

Hi Mike - Thanks!

Keep in mind, guys, that this is just a picture thread really, I will post a comprehensive review of the C&K and possibly an addition :D when I am nearing the end of my time with it (them?)....

best regards -
