Hello fellow knife enthusiasts!

Mr. Protourist aka Mack designed a wonderful blade that mimicked the design queues of the popular Randall knives and commissioned our own Mr. K to produce said in 01 steel and ebony.

Then, our great friend and benefactor, Mr. Protourist, allowed some of us lucky JK Supporters to use his new knife, even before the designer himself had laid hands on this stellar piece!

I was one of the lucky few that were allowed to handle this fine new design in person -

Please take time to peruse this fine thread before sauntering forward.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/901102-Protourist!

(it appears that all of my pics in this thread are gone - I will work on correcting, but in the meantime - you can enjoy the text and others comments on this fine design)

I ordered my version of this great design in a slightly thinner stock (I am more of a kitchen guy) and I also specified three solid pins and I think this is the first JK in his new Snakewood scale.

All I can say is WOW!

So, as most of you that know me will attest, the first real workout that this knife would get was dissecting a beef tenderloin roll. Yea, my wife and I eat well - may as well when you have access to such fine cutlery!

This knife has a very fine "angle of attack", speaking of the angle of the handle and the cutting edge. The thoughtful design puts the cutting edge in an attack angle without having to contort your wrist to achieve the same. Very nice, but so subtle that you would not even know what you were missing if you did not have a knife such as the Big Mack Cutlass to show you the way!

It doesn't get better than this - JK 01 steel with a wonderful Protourist design, and chopping up some Filet Mignon! In this pic, I am pulling back on a sliver of silver skin (connective tissue) and the JK / Big Mack is able to get in and slice like the best filet knife. John put his greatest edge on this Cutlass!

Rounded spine? Check!

Mack (or any of my JK Supporter friends) this is awaiting you in the cornfields of Illinois when you can be here - A perfectly marbled angus beef Filet, and I know how to prepare these puppies as you might imagine!

More mouth watering JK / Mack goodness -

Snakewood is so awesome - you that know me know that I love wonderfully figured natural wood handles, and as such most of my existing JK Collection is fitted with John's beautiful Maple Burl, but from now on, figure on Snakewood for all of mqqn's additions!

this is by far the most beautiful JK knife I have ever seen - and I have seen a few. Notice in the following picture the way John contoured the grind toward the tip - part art and part function - and hard to see in image, but easy to appreciate in hand!

I love the black micarta liners - also a permanent addition to the "mqqn" order going forward.

Yea - an in hand shot in "grandpa's garden" -

This is a big knife with great ergonomics that make it a superb tool for whatever comes your way. I prefer thinner blades for my uses so I ordered this in a thinner steel than that which Mack originally specified, but John can customize this design for you to meet your needs.

Thanks to Mack for this great design and allowing us lucky few to test his new baby while he was dealing with larger issues in his life.

I cannot help but think that more people will realize what a great tool has been made here, and in turn order one that is exactly what each future customer that chooses this wonderful knife will enjoy for a lifetime!

best regards -

I cannot believe how beautifully that turned out. That Snakewood is amazing. Perfect choice for it.
I've been using mine for a couple of weeks now and it's an incredible slicer, with the thinner stock I'm surprised that the beef didn't cut itself.:D

WOW!!!

thank you gentlemen -

I will bring this one to Michigan for the gathering.

Snakewood is really worth the extra - I am going to get an RN9 in this material, then a Kephart.

Who is going to beat me to a Snakewood Kephart? John should do a monthly special for Kepharts in Snakewood - but if he does, I want #1 with black liners and rounded spine!

I wish I was going to the get together if only to see the looks on the faces when they first pick up this blade. While yours is lighter than mine, mine is unbelievably well balanced.
They are a remarkably handy knife for such a long blade. I'm really shocked by how strong the tip turned out too. It makes it a really good tool.

Hi Mack -

I will make sure to take pictures of the guys checking out the Big Mack Cutlass (BMC?).

Maybe we can get Mr. K to pose for some "pirate shots" of him swinging it around in the air to re-create the scene in the shop in Mokena.

I agree with you - the knife's design is such that it is very easy to control the tip - Truly, Purvis hit it on the head - it IS a bear skinner.

It was a lot more nimble for cleaning a tenderloin roll than I expected it to be (I have done two rolls, one with yours and one with my variation).

I mean it - this is really a JK to have - it's a great tool. Mine just happens to have on it's dress attire!

I should add another shot - this one shows off the "leopard like" figuring. It really should be called leopard wood imo.

I couldn't agree more on the fancy attire. When I was telling SWMBO about it I said it reminded me of Leopard stripes. Mine is just wearing the plain black tux while yours is dressed up for a night on the town.

If you can get John to reenact the Pirate shots for the camera, I will be buying the drinks when I see ya.:D

Everytime I look at this I get a bad thought. I keep thinking of the perfect Camp / Kitchen Set, consisting of the following, all with matching handles:

Cutlass (carving knife)
Improved Bowie ( boning knife)
Potawatomi (personal steak knife)
Serving fork (I made these with the old BBQ Set)

What the heck, toss in a 1/8" thick Knatchet for a cleaver!

That would be awesome.

I have my JK's in a wooden "knife block" on the counter, with the two Kitchen Knives, the Modified Wharncliffe and then the Big Mack Cutlass in the middle.

Wait a second, a 1/8 inch Knatchet? Oh my!!!
:D

that snakewood is gorgeous

The thing that's scary to me about it is the fact that cameras rarely do a wood justice. As great as it looks in the pics, I must assume that it looks even better in person. That is scary.
