Hey guys.
I got this knife from John a week or two ago. I sold my other one so i could get a 3/32".

My drill press crapped out a couple weeks ago. I found one today on craigslist for 50 bucks and i jumped on it. this means, i can get this project going!

Had John put an edge on this like that of the Chuckwagon. Another great job here, John. This one will be used in the kitchen and for game prep....uhhh kind of like a hunting knife!

Very excited to get this one going.

Looks great! Scales look like they will be purdy ;).

thanks Hugh. got those scales from John at the spring gathering. i am going to sand them a bit to take a look at the grain, but i think they should be just fine. John wasn't sure what wood this was. they sure are heavy. my guess is ironwood or cocobolo.

Those scales look killer unfinished, can't wait to see 'em finished up now.(I was thinking they were some sorta home brewed micarta)
Have fun Todd.

thanks Myke. that's what i am hemmin' and hawin' about. i really liked how that green burlap turned out on the knife i did for that other forum member. and, i found an old pair of brown cords this morning that were in my giveaway bag. and, i thought...hmmmm. i may make 'em up and see how they look.

BUT...i think on this particular knife, i want the more classic look of a nice wooden handle.

Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. I`m pretty sure they are cocobolo, I could not risk using them.

Should turn out great! (as usual)

That's a nice looking pattern. I can really appreciate the lines in it's naked form. I'm quite sure your scale skills will do it justice.

Jeff

thanks guys. and you're too kind Jeff.

I noticed today that the holes are a little bigger than my 1/4" pin stock. will have to figure out what to do about that. i have an idea. i may wrap them in a piece of epoxy drenched constuction paper. or perhaps burlap. but, i still want it to be smooth enough to go through the holes. trying not to make myself extra work. it'll all work out though.

Those wood scales would look nice, but your doing pretty good with the homemade micarta too. Tough call, but I'm looking forward to seeing what you decide.

I'd think that if you got the pin holes lined up in the scales the extra room in the handle holes wouldn't matter, once filled with glue/epoxy. Trick would be getting the holes lined up.

yeah, i've wondered this. but, it seems like a 1/32" gap or so, so i think it may be noticeable. i might just pack it full of the "sawdust" though and call it even. i mean heck...i plan to keep this knife, and i'm pretty easy to please. ;) :D

wait a minute...i am thinking about this all wrong. it is not going to be noticeable at all. i will still be drilling 1/4" holes in the handle slabs. so, there will be a tight fit there. the only gap will be 3/32" at the tang. that won't matter. i am guessing that's what you were talking about KYTurkey. forgive the confusion. :o

Glad to hea it's not happened but just in case I've had them too big before now, so long as it's not extreme then it doesn't matter, that mosaic pin stock I used a few times was actually just under 1/4" wide so it always came in a little smaller then the holes so the pin could fit through the knife

these two I just screwed up and went ahead anyway, weeee :)

hey peter....that top one. is that the wood that John gave you at the gathering? if so, that looks great.

You kidding?....that's what i like about you! :D

Update: Decided that the liners i had on-hand were too dark. need to wait for some new ones to come in.
