Job/Career/Education advice?

You need to start focusing on the positives in your life. You have no debt, are paying your way through school, and have a decent job that pays well.

I would have killed to make that kind of money in college. Now why you decided to co-sign your mother's mortgage is beyond me and that is the only mistake you have made yet. Its one thing to offer to pay half but to chain your kid to the actual mortgage......bad idea.

Your work situation will not improve. Bosses suck so get used to it. Take your damn breaks!!!! Even if you do nothing but read some school notes at a table. Work as many hours as you can without your school work suffering. If you can get a bachelor's degree in 5 years with no debt then absolutely do that.

You need to consider your next step. Find a summer job or internship and keep your grocery store job in the evenings too. Look with the local, state, and federal government as they hire lots of bean counters and pay well. Feds normally do paid internships. Consider getting a Masters degree once you get a decent job.

Use your college's mental health services if you need it. I know a lot of people that are trying to do what you are doing but with kids, car payments, and mortgages.

When I was in school I worked at a newspaper and depending on my class schedules I would either go in at midnight and get off at 7am or go in at 4am and get off at 11am. Slept when I could and maintained a 3.5 in Chemistry.

It was a mind numbing job but that was what I wanted. I would tape my notes to a machine I was working and every chance I had I was reading or memorizing something.

Oh and get yourself some transportation. ..you are 26 not 16.

Ah yes, but that decent job is looking less decent, and losing that less than decent job will equal debt. I'd be satisfied with what I have if I didn't keep having less of it:thumbup:.

Correction, to chain your kid to another mortgage(to clarify, I only have one mortgage, but we technically have 3 places now, 1 with me and mom, 1 with brother and roommate, and 1 to rent out). I also can't stress enough that my family doesn't exactly see me as an individual human being, but rather a dumb animal that doesn't know what's best for itself. So we didn't exactly have a debate about whether or not to do it, my signing it was already said and done lest there be weeks of yelling and screaming and threats of violence. Call it cowardice if you like, but my obeying orders is somewhat of a given considering that this is the woman who would viciously beat me until I got down on my knees and begged for my life...weekly. I did notice my brother talked his way out of signing any mortgage for any of the 3 places. Not surprising since he's the only one having been treated like an adult, despite the fact that he's now occupying one of the 3 places, and only recently did so(maybe the last 2 years) without rental assistance from my mom.

Always a debate whether it's worth it to take a 15 minute break or have to hear it from a guy who would rip so hard into me that I would break down in tears and trigger a panic attack(he obviously didn't have a clue what was happening to me and quite literally said "don't do this to me"). He obviously didn't get a hint after one coworker quit, then hung himself a month later(coworker is gay, boss is a Jehovah's Witness, overheard one conversation where my boss said "God will forgive all your sins"...really?:rolleyes:). One girl transferred. One guy tried to transfer, had his schedule screwed with, then quit. Another guy is quitting 2 days from now(2 weeks notice). I still don't think he gets it.

Frankly, I think it's nice that God forgives him, because nobody else will:thumbdn:.

It was interesting when I looked closer into that. Almost every private sector job demanded a 2-year degree for starting positions like AP/AR payroll clerk. Whereas my mother got a clerk position state-side and worked into a higher Accounting position. Nothing as high as a CPA or equal skill level, but it's interesting how she managed that getting only a GED in her mid 40s with quite literally zero college.

I always felt public sector jobs were always ridiculously generous, and a massive waste of taxpayer dollars outside of police/fire/EMT. I also didn't want to get dragged into politics and the like, plus I always felt like I might get "sullied" if I ever went that direction.

Can't say my experience with the private sector has thus far been that promising, but shared stories from my Accounting instructor from her days as an auditor for the IRS leaves me with the impression that public sector work is overfilled with lazy SOBs, which is all and well until we go the way of Greece. Then I'd have to join the violent mobs and fight to keep my overcompensated job.

I'll give it a shot, but it doesn't seem like they'll be open until the semester starts.

Guess I'm a lazy ass in that I want to get that 4.0 with some margin for free time.

It was a mind numbing job but that was what I wanted. I would tape my notes to a machine I was working and every chance I had I was reading or memorizing something.
Funny thing, but I never studied much and my brother hated that about me. Not that I ever felt it did too much good since every question I miss on an exam is small stuff I would never put in my notes. I was mostly struggling trying to keep up with the deadlines on big projects and basically did every scrap of homework at the last minute.

Oh and get yourself some transportation. ..you are 26 not 16.
Oh, it's agreed on whether or not I should get transportation. It just seems as though only certain methods of transportation is approved.

Bike = OK
Moped = OK
Scooter = OK
Motorcycle = F*** NO!!!
Car = OK

Still waiting for someone to explain to me what the difference would be with the first four if I collided with a car at 30 mph on all of them:rolleyes:.

I suspect they'll all go something like this:

I'm buying the motorcycle anyway. It'll be a nice test to see what my future is going to look like. I figure if she trashes my bike or otherwise attempts to force(threats or otherwise) me to dispose of it, it'll be time to try my luck on the streets if she's going to manage my personal finances to suit her agenda/ideology for the rest of my natural life.

You sound like a nice enough guy with some decent insight into your unique problems, but if half of what you type is the truth then you really need to find yourself a mental health provider.

You want a 4.0, good for you. Maintaining employment and getting that 4.0 are not mutually exclusive.

Before you write off the single largest employer in the country, you may want to broaden your knowledge base about them. Especially considering that your line of work explicitly revolves around the rules that they (big brother) write.

If you don't think you will come across lazy, worthless, overpaid employees no matter where you get a job, you are in for a surprise.

I personally think my family are the ones in need of some mental health therapy. I did have anger management therapy early on, but that personally is insulting to me because it assumes the problem originated with me and assumed that beating your child weekly would not be a source of anger.

Hopefully not, I'm trying to get reliable transportation to give myself an extra hour or two daily.

Given the whole IRS targeting, VA, NSA, and other political BS, I think I feel justified in my skepticism given the fact that I'm red in a blue state, and I'm quite notorious for disagreeing with everyone on just about everything.

True, but let's just say I'm pretty sure some jobs will have more "diluted" lazy than concentrated lazy. And while maybe I shouldn't complain at getting paid to do nothing, that's only as good as the job will last. Find yourself laid off, and all that time screwing around will come back to bite you in the ass as it becomes obvious that your own skills have decayed in that time period.
