Hi Guys & All,

Looking for some information on a 110 Buck knife that sold on ebay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/290616802005?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

it's a 1985 (at least on the blade) deep etch, Gary Hawk, called "Fresh Catch", there is a sow bear with a fish in her mouth followed by cubs. Anyone know anything about this knife? was it a LE/SO knife, sample knife? It is very nice, I wish I was the one who got it;).

Just guessing, but Habbie may have one, he has several of those type of blades...300

No, JB, 300, I can't help :(.

I don't own a 110 with this etching.
Also I couldn't find the knife in the BCCI special project list.
Buck introduced a lot of special projects with etched blades after
1981. The three dots were used the last time in 1981 (two
exceptions in tle BCCI listing).

I would be glad if I could write more informations.

Best,
Haebbie

I'll let you know when I get it. I talked with Gary about it many years ago. This is the first one I have actually seen(or will see). I don't know yet if Aurum or Dillingham or some other vendor did the etch. Further, I don't know how many were made but not many. There were only twelve each of the Cowboy scene 110's (also 1985)made in black or black and gold. Stay tuned.

Very cool that you got it Richard! Now you need to get a camera for some pohot's of that rare knife. I was wondering if it was Proto that never got made? I see it is numbered 004

Just received the knife. It is an aftermarket project. Still don't know how many were made. The etch appears to be Dillingham Graphics but there is no hallmark on the blade. The font on the serial number (004) is not Buck. The knife was cleaned with something like a Scotch Brite pad so it is full of fine scratches. Also, the blade has been used. I cleaned the knife up as best I could. If the knife had not been so rare I would have sent it back. Such is the risk of buying something sight unseen. Hope that helps. I will add this knife to the special projects list.

Has that been done before? If so, that means that there are aftermarket Bucks listed in their Special Projects List? That will really confuse things if it's a fact in my opinion. I've always relied on the belief that if something shows up on that list it was an authentic (and all) Buck project. :(

Thanks for the information Richard. Any chance this was a sample for a project that was rejected? Maybe sample #4????

Does sound odd.

Maybe the Special Projects list should clearly state whether it was aftermarket or Buck?

Or have one list for aftermarket and one list for Buck?

After giving it some thought, perhaps Mr. Matheny is using the term "aftermarket" to describe knives made exclusively for customers by Buck. Since the list contains both Buck Limited Editions and special order knives, that may be what he means.

I can't imagine that Buck would try to keep up with and list all the aftermarket knives done by others after the knives leave the factory.

Plumber, Yes, that was the way I took his meaning in his post. The others are way too much to keep up with. DM

Yeah David, I'm sure now that's what he meant. :o It seems to be a case of the same term (aftermarket) having two different definitions depending on who is using it.

In my mind, aftermarket has always meant something like one of these two:

Yes, but not everyone uses the term in that manner. Some of the posts I read I've had to really stop and think about what the author was saying. Before I answered in a totally different vein from the direction he was going. Were here from different culture, different geographic areas and some even a different language all trying to discuss the same topic and typing fast while doing so. Its the make up for a ball game with mixed signals. I like your knives. DM

Aftermarket in my mind means that the knife was modified after it left the plant. The special projects list I am referencing is the one I keep. The Buck supplied data can be differentiated by the inclusion of a Catalog number and/or ECN number and/or Project number. The Special Projects list you see in the BCCI newsletter goes from Joe Houser to Larry Oden to me for reformatting. I then give it back to Larry for Bruce to put in the newsletter then I add the data to my list. I also add whatever I can find in the aftermarket of historical value. I don't add all the Yellowhorse, Prater etc. variations because there are too many to keep up with. There is also someone in TN who is putting gold etches on knives in the aftermarket I can't keep up with. If someone else wants to try to keep up with all the recent variations go for it. When I started there didn't appear to be that many aftermarket variations but over the years Buck Knives have become highly modified so I stick with the stuff that tells me something about the Buck Knives story. FYI.

What an incredible amount of work to maintain the list! My hats off to you Richard!!! Thank you so much.

Joe, it has always been a collaboration between us. Thank you and thanks to Larry and all the others who help. Someday maybe we will get this figured out.

wow after market....so i am still confused some what...

to me if i can buy the knife from buck or a buck dealer it is not
after market...
but if some one buyes a knife from buck and sends them to xyZ company
for decration for a project or art work for a company event such as 10 year celbration
with gold on the blade numberd ext
it is after market as it is not covered by bucks warrenty
so there for
i can buy a knife from buck send it to Dave Yellowhorse for emblishments
and it is a after market knife not covered by bucks warrenty
but i can buy one from buck that dave did and it is a factory buck knife
with all its warranty ....

i mean: is it is fair to id knives as factory bucks or not based on if it has warreny or not..
kinda kun-fuse-ing ta me many times...
and i tant been out to the shed for any juce either!!
but sure nuff could use some..
