does anyone know what kind of steel john deere used in making there bailer tongue? it puts out a lot of sparks when grinding and when cutting it into strips about 2 x 12 it bows about 1/2 '
any guesses, and whould this steel be any good for knives?:confused:

The only way to know for sure would be to call JD. But the cheapest part of a knife you make will be the steel. buy good steel and you know what you have and how to HT it right.
 
if there is a john deere dealer near you call and see if they have any cultivator discs with this number SS0032. they might have some used ones laying around. these are made from 1075 and are heat treated to 56rc. they are 3/16" thick and 16" or so in diamater. the steel will trash a brand new sawblade in seconds so the only way to cut off a piece is with a plasma torch or grind at least an 1/8" or deeper groove and break off what you want. a cutting torch is a waste of time since it leaves too rough an edge and takes too much time to clean up.
