John Ek Knives: Who Likes them and Why?

Okay I found AHF and a bit about Richmond which was mostly kitchen knives? Benchmade the company came about in 1988, was there some kind of company collaboration on Richmond Benchmade Knives or was it two distinct entities?

Two different.

Bench Made used to be a term for a handmade knives that were made by a small group of knifemakers, usually in batches. It was a point of pride, but it's also an odd term, so it started to fade out for other terms like small shop, etc.....Then in the late 80's, Benchmade (earlier, pre 2000's, they sometimes used BenchMade) started using it as a tradename, and that was it. Now it's more associated with the Oregon company than anything else. Buerlein meant it in the earlier small shop sense of the word.

All are Richmond "3 WAR" roll marked.
All NOS from the same guy whose dad had bought them new.

A friend did the wrap.

I got him into knives, and then he got into wrapping stuff. He's made some pretty cool stuff, wrapped a couple knives for me.

In 2002 had no idea what an active duty Marine would need in a hot war zone. I bought a few knives for young Marines we knew . . .one was our son.

Among other knives, I bought several EK daggers and gifted them. The EK Company had just been sold to Blackjack . . . .with the Ek family keeping limited production of high end comparatives. I bought several (5?) over a few weeks at $75 to $100 each.

These were all bought new with the view that they would be carried ivy Marines n combat roles. Everyone who got one from me came back OK. Two I know of currently live in a tool box dedicated to holding a Randall #16-!, a Ka-Bar and a CRK Green Beret.

In the pic above, with the 3 knives, the one on the right, is the first Ek that I bought.

I just got to my first duty station in Germany, got my first issue of SOF mag and saw the ad for Ek Knives.

$75 bucks! I wrote a check, sent it off and about a month later, every 11B in my company is fondling it!
