Over the past while I've had an itch to add a large classic American piece to my collection.

At the Blade Show I'd heard lots of good things about the work of ABS journeyman smith John Fitch from friends like Gus Kalanzis, Anthony Lombardo, and Matt Lamey.

With recommendations like those and others found right here on BladeForums I wasn't going too far out on a limb moving "Big John" on to my short list of candidates for a forged Bowie style knife.

I had seen a stag handled "Trooper" model by John Fitch on Kevin Pensinger's site:
http://www.theedgeequipment.com/

and it had caused me to return to the site several times to look at it again and again.

Finally, having had enough of looking at the picture, I contacted Kevin and asked him if it was still available. It was.

Well, the knife just arrived, and I must say it's even nicer in person than in the picture.

Featuring an 8.75" blade with an OAL of 13.5", this knife is incredibly agile and well balanced. You hardly even sense its weight.

The 3/16" thick forged 1084 blade is well finished and came with a very nice, sharp cutting edge (as well as a nicely sharpened false edge).

The sambar stag grip is as comfortable in the hand as it is handsome.

Both the guard and grooved butt cap are nickel silver.

The knife was delivered with a very fine Kenny Rowe "Pin Loc" sheath featuring a basket weave finish.

All in all I would say that this knife represents great value for the dollar when you consider the fit and finish as well as the artistry it reflects.

I have been told that John will be going for his Master Smith rating at next year's Blade Show. Judging by this piece I don't doubt that he'll attain his goal.

Readers of Knives Illustrated can read a nice article about the maker in the August, 2000 issue on page 79.

This is my first Fitch knife and my first transaction with Kevin Pensinger. It won't be my last time dealing with either of these gentlemen.

Hi Blues, great knife! I'm glad you bought that Trooper, as I probably would have succumed to that piece later this week

As you found out Kevin is super to deal with; I recommend him highly.

Hi Blues,

John is a very good maker, perhaps the best of the new crop of "bowie makers" coming up.

He is also a very kind person, always willing to share knowledge and time.

Puts alot of emphasis on cutting and performance in general.

Im hoping to spend some shop time with John soon.

BTW Beautiful knife.

John takes all aspects of his work seriously and it reflects in each knife I have seen of his over the last 3 years or so. I have been just as impressed with John and his wife. They are good folks.

He also makes some users now and then. I would bet the farm that they would be excellent, but I have not used or know of anyone who has used one of them.

Jeff, his favorite blues Is nine inches long. It's not a record, but it was made by a very fine Smith whose knives are as light and fast as Air.

Great knife Blues! How the heck are you gonna carry that thing around your neck?

Para, turning Green with Envy. When I get frustrated enough, I'll just hold my breath until I turn blue. I'm mad as hell and short on money, and I just can't take this anymore. First Jeff and his Burkes, and now Blues is having a Fitch. There is a Winkler calling me and all this knife buying is not helping me resist the Need for a new knife. Now, if I can just figure out how to turn this darn computer thing off.....

Para,

LOL! You'd better get that Winkler, I like his stuff a lot and I want to see what you had in mind.

Thanks for saving me from having to try to answer that question about my favorite Blues... Man, would that be a tough one.

Thanks everyone for the nice remarks. Glad I chose well.

That really is a beauty, Blues. In light of the fact that you never seem to get only one of a particular style, I'm looking forward to seeing what your next "large classic American piece" will be.

Enjoy, bro!

Blues,

Thanks so much for the kind words! I will print this thread out when it slows up a bit and mail it off to John (he does not get on the computer much with his two jobs!). He will be very happy to see that you like the knife.

As Gus, Matt and others have noted Mr and Mrs John Fitch are tremendous people and more than a pleasure to work with.

As for the "user" Fitch - keep your eyes open as we are working on just such a piece

As the original owner of that knife, I know what a nice knife you have bought. Things happen, and people need money for new toys. Otherwise, I would still own it. John makes some of the nicest knives out there, and is a great guy to deal with also(good thing, because he's too damn big to fight with!). I have John making me a Viking broad sword, for whenever I decide to go to battle! Go see the movie Gladiator, and see if you dont want to go swinging a sword around!

This is one knife that will last many life times.

Blues,
Nice Fitch piece. John and his father-in-law live about 1 hour from me. I've had the oportunity to watch John's work progress over the last 4 years. He's doing some good work. So is 'ol Pete as far as that goes. I think John stands a very good chance at masters rating next year.

The more I play with this knife the more impressed I am with it. It is so well balanced that it feels "weightless". Moves very quickly.

The stag is particularly nice and feels so good in the hand.

Don't get me wrong, there are a couple of little "flaws" present either from handling or when the knife was made, but taken in light of the overall package they don't amount to much and don't at all take away from the joy of the overall piece.

Thanks again,

Blues

Blues,
John was one of the first friends that I made when I attended my first hammer-in at Washington, Ark. I also took my JS cutting test at his home while on a shop tour with the Arkansas Knifemakers Association last October. You would have to look a long time to find a better man and friend.
He also has a lot of the old knife books that feature some of the older bowies and is very capable of reproducing what he sees. I have no doubt that if the need should arise and the blade was put to the test, you would be standing at the end.
He is hard to beat in the cutting contests too.

Thanks, Ray. High praise indeed.

I hope John gets to read this thread as he should be proud to read the comments offered by both his colleagues as well as the collectors.

Just got back from Austin TX so missed out on this til now. His work is better today than it was last week, I'm amazed at the speed of his progress. It's just a reflection of his love for knives showing its self I guess.

Blues. If there is something that you feel needs correcting, just send it to him and he will attend to it. When you get one of his knives thats just the beginning, He backs them 100%.

Thanks for the good reviews, and no I did not teach him. Heck I don't know enough to do that.
