The 'Stein in it's sheath..

I was originally on the fence about this purchase considering the price but I decided to pull the trigger when I found out it was hand-forged.I want to get straight down to it purely based on the knife itself. This knife really is the Frankenstein monster, it's a massive, heavy rough beast of a knife.I think this will appeal to some for the same exact reasons it will turn off others. Being a relatively strong individual I find that I am able to handle most blades with ease from folders like the Coldsteel xl espada and rajah 2 to the Laredo bowie and Crkt Hisshou. When I say with ease I mean they are actually light in hand. Not this knife. Here it is with some other combat blades.

(Frankenstein,CS Laredo bowie, CS oss, Swamp rat RMD LE)

This blade is 2lbs,1/4" of forged A2 steel. I have provided a picture from above in hand with the bolts screwed in ( they can be removed)

I also added the White brass skull and menuki for some added flare.

The sheath is a very well done kydex deal, I opted for the extra security of having the grenade pin that goes through the sheath and spanish notch on the blade. It is connected with thick paracord , The belt loop is thick, quality leather. Overall very well done sheath. It isn't an after thought.

Will this knife be for everyone? No,not even close but for some it will be just what they are looking for :D The knife is marketed as a combat bowie knife but I think it's actually in another category all together. The over-sized guards and bolts protect your hand from most any blow coming directly at it if you knew what you were doing. The weight and leverage that would be imparted on the edge or point would leave a target devastated . I believe this knife would make a brutal Pig sticker . I can't say it enough that that size, capability and sheer weight of this piece liken it a lot more to a short sword then a knife(even a so-called combat knife). It makes the laredo feel like a toy in comparison, It's serious hunk of steel.Even the Pommel leaves 1/4" dents in wood with a decent blow.

Pros:

* Cool factor: It's a massive hand-forged full tang blade with bolts and guards and a fierce Pommel.

*Capability: This is a knife you can take to hell and back , From feel alone I would imagine this thing would function as well as a hatchet in the woods, And a cleaver on meat and bones. The slight recurve also helps.

*Durability:At a quarter-inch thick A2, You will have no problem batoning or prying.

*Combative/defense: With a weapon at each end ,large handle for leverage an different grips, blade design and weight, multiple ways to trap and/or guard from other blades or weapons..It isn't a beast.. it's THE BEAST.

Cons: Of course this couldn't be a review if everything was perfect. There are some negatives but nothing that can't be easily fixed or changed. Some of these things might not bother people at all but I have to keep it real.

* Fit & finish: The blade is extremely rough in execution, it still has hammer marks and is left unpolished.

*Edge: It doesn't arrive with a hair popping edge, it arrives with a paper cutting edge. This was easily improved by a few strokes on a strop. Also the clip or backcut is extremely thick more like an axe unlike the laredo bowie's sharp clip.

*Handle material: The paracord wrap feels good in hand and is comfortable, I just think another configuration might improve this aspect such as micarta slaps.

*Price: This mofo was very pricey and the additions of the skulls and grenade pin add to the price.

Overall, I think this knife would be right at home in the apocalypse . It wasn't designed for bushcraft, it wasn't designed for concealed carry,it wasn't designed for cutting fruit..It's designed for war and breaking things.

I think it was designed for fitting in with the biker, chainy, gnarly, crazed man in a kilt look. I guy who looks like he's been up all night doing something illegal, and is carry 12 knives just on principle. I like his stuff. Its totally not me, but I like it.

Haha Yeah I understand

IMO there are too many aspects in this knife that point to the 'let's do it cheap' attitude: Paracord is always the cheapest way to wrap a handle, the not-even-half-way-up hollow grind is used in mostly cheap blades and putting a nice finish on a knife requires a lot of time and effort, which makes the knife more expensive. I don't wanna talk the knife down, but I personally like to see the money I pay for a knife reflect in the knife's grind, fit&finish and so on. This knife looks more like left-untouched-after-HT than handforged but that's just my 0.02.
Enjoy your knife and put it through its paces!!

Good point my friend good point

Based on your taste in knives you should totally get a CS Natchez bowie in San Mai. Trust me, you will really love it... its a brute of a knife but it handles very well...

I agree with buffalohump, it is a really basses knife. I handled my friends Natchez and I fell in live with it, and I own a Laredo of my own and I have never regretted it

My Laredo

The laredo is a much more refined blade, The frankenstein is more of a brutish short sword. I think I will grab the natchez, I think it will have the best of both worlds.

If you have ever seen this guy Fitzen and his edc package, you hit the nail on the head. If he ever falls of the dock he's all done

Nntrance,

Nice blade! The Frankenstein is like nothing else. Mine is "finished" similarly to yours, and I call it the Medieval Fankenstein. It's the heaviest knife I own, and I'm pretty sure that blade-to-blade it would break them all as well. I like my Laredo too (John fixed it's handle and guard for me). For it's size the Laredo is very nicely balanced and light.

Let us know how you find it as you start to use it,

Take care,

Thanks FF! Yeah I am actually modifying my frankenstein right now , just some slight modifications but I will post pics when it's done. Yeah The oss is one of the most under rated , under appreciated combat blades out there.

Looks like a hoss to me. I especially like A2 in a working fixed blade as well as the Paracord wrapped handle. The guard is a nice touch as well. All in all it looks a bit rough but that's just its character IMO. I like it for what it is.

I stripped some of the forge scale off the frankenstein and also double wrapped the handle for a better purchase. Also, check out what I just got today :D

Sorry, the only reason this guy is known is because of nutnfancy. He did a sharpening video with him in which he hacked up a knife on a belt grinder and called it sharp. Probably the worst sharpening I have ever seen. His knives don't look much better.

OP, I mean no offence to you and I hope the knife serves you well. It's just my opinion.

No offense taken but perhaps with such a strong opinion you could stay out of such threads? Surely there was nothing of interest for you here in the first place seeing the threads title? Contribution is a good thing when it adds to the thread but this doesn't.

Thanks for the post,

Hey man, you work fast! How about that Natchez huh? Sharp enough for ya? :D

This site is really bad for knife nuts. I bought my Natchez after I saw a review of it by Ankerson right here... haha

Yeah man the Natchez is a masterpiece , I also had my eye on it and just wasn't sure about pulling the trigger. Now I'm thinking why I didn't I do it sooner? Beautiful knife, most balanced , well done and designed knife I have ever handled. All I need to do now is sharpen the clip and it will be perfect.
