John Galt

I read half of it and stopped......

Jeff told me later that the second half is the important part but it's been a few years since I read the first half and I'd be really corn-fused if I tried to read just the second half and I just can't bring myself to re-read the first half.

Rand and I are at an impass.

You have to get through Rand's piss-poor writing style in first 200 pages of detailed drivel to begin to even get anything good out of it

I made the mistake of reading The Fountainhead first and could never make myself read Atlas Shrugged after that. May have to change that this winter.

You guys should turn the "Who Is John Galt" into a hyperlink referring to either the book itself, or the Wiki about the quote http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Galt. This might make it easier to find out what you're hinting about for morons who haven't heard the phrase. Then again, morons don't buy ESEE knives :D

That would be anti-Randish to give the answer to someone without them working to find out what it is :)

is it on audio cd b/c if the 1st 200 pages are boring,I'll not turn the 1st 10 pages ..... I think I have a touch of ADD :D :p

Rand just gets too detailed in trying to build a picture. But I also understand that Rand knew she was playing to dumb audience (at least the majority) so she probably did it because of that.

I think that anyone that cares enough to click on a link, but doesn't know how to open google and type "who is John Galt" (or highlight that sentence and right click and select google "who is John Galt" for firefox users) really isn't the type to read books.

And they damn sure wouldn't be the type who Ayn Rand would want reading her books :D

Jeff is completely right. The last two thirds are the parts you'll be focused in on but without the rest it wouldn't end up as accurate or powerful.

Yes, on audible.com. They have discount codes, I've got a couple of books off there. One Second After was about 13 hours, the unabridged version of Atlas Shrugged is like 60 hours.

For those of you into fantasy (I'm not usually), Terry Goodkind's Sword Of Truth series is heavily influenced by Atlas Shrugged. Some seriously great books.

For those of you not opposed to reading fantasy (I'm usually more into horror), The Sword Of Truth series by Terry Goodkind was heavily influenced by Atlas Shrugged and happens to be really good.

I recently saw where "Atlas Shrugged" was possibly going to be made into a movie down the road. If I'm not mistaken, Rand worked with screenplay writers at one time, but she was never happy with the direction the writers wanted to take the movie.

On a side note, as previously mentioned, RUSH took a lot of criticism for basing the song "2112" on the philosophies of Rand. There are many songs in their catalog that are influenced by Rand.

For those that have never heard the song "Something For Nothing" by RUSH (on the "2112" album), I strongly urge you to check it out and pay attention to the lyrics. The song basically states that freeloading, lazy people need to get off their ass and stop leeching and depending on those individuals that work their ass off. Great song...

Thus the reason I'm a Rush fan. ;)

I'd say this is about as Galtish as you can get in a song:

"Something For Nothing"

Waiting for the winds of change
To sweep the clouds away
Waiting for the rainbow's end
To cast its gold your way
Countless ways
You pass the days

Waiting for someone to call
And turn your world around
Looking for an answer
To the question you have found
Looking for
An open door

You don't get something for nothing
You can't have freedom for free
You won't get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be

What you own is your own kingdom
What you do is your own glory
What you love is your own power
What you live is your own story
In your head is the answer
Let it guide you along
Let your heart be the anchor
And the beat of your own song

You don't get something for nothing
You can't have freedom for free
You won't get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be

If you REALLY want to read some absolutely awesome lyrics, take this in, also from Rush.

"The Trees"

There is unrest in the forest,
there is trouble with the trees,
for the maples want more sunlight,
and the oaks ignore their pleas...

The trouble with the maples,
and they're quite convinced they're right,
they say the oaks are just too lofty,
and they grab up all the light,
but the oaks can't help their feelings,
if they like the way they're made,
and they wonder why the maples,
can't be happy in their shade...

There is trouble in the forest,
and the creatures all have fled,
as the maples scream 'Oppression!'
and the oaks just shake their heads...

So the maples formed a union,
and demanded equal rights,
'The oaks are just too greedy,
we will make them give us light,'
now there's no more oak oppression,
for they passed a noble law,
and the trees are all kept equal,
by hatchet, axe and saw...
