I posted this question within another thread and received no response so here it is again in a new thread.

Anyone have any experience with the knives of John Greco, from Tenn.? I am just on the verge of buying one of his "fighting" knives, at a good price.

However, going to his website I find that he is now making newer knives and has totally changed his preference in steel.

The knife I want to buy is A2, which I always thought was right up there, in terms of knife steel, Now, apparently, he has switched to 8670, which he claims has an edge RC of 58, with a "dead soft" spine, adding to it's flexiblility. And that the 8670 is "easier to sharpen and holds an edge longer". Big claims. I'm inclined to go with the older A2 model.

Can you guys help me make the proper decision?

You cannot go wrong with Greco. His knives are tough as nails!!! I prefer the designs of his older knives but I don't know much about his new steel. If you are inclined to go for the A2 model, go for it.

Thanks for the input. I have to admit that one of the reasons I like the A2 is that the older model has a 6 1/2" blade as opposed to the shorter blades of the newer knives. I think a "fighting" knife should have at least a 6" blade. The other is my unfamiliarity with the newer steel. Can someone enlighten me as to the qualities of the 8670 steel, as opposed to A2 (or others)? This is apparently a German made steel?

Ciao, John

I look at his knives and have a hard time believing that he can make them the way he does for the kind of money they sell for. Excellent value.

A-2 is a steel I know and like very much. I have no idea how good 8670 is. It is a steel I know nothing about.

greco lives in southern ky ... not tennessee

his knives are stout to say the least

my grecos have always had decent edges but that is not a universal opinion here

they represent good value for the money

either steel will serve you well

admittedly not my style, but still good strong knives.

I got my Greco Companion from Bandaidman (Thanks!) and it is one of my favorite knives. I like it a lot because it cost so little I'm not afraid to use it. It's A2 and seems to hold a VERY sharp edge for a loooong time, and it's not hard to sharpen.

I did a couple of modifications to mine to make it fit my needs a little better. I sanded the coating off of just the bevels and the spine, so the only part that's black are the flats of the blade. It looks good and it doesn't seem to drag as much without the coating. I also took a small round file and filed 4 lines across both handle slabs in between the bolts, and sanded the entire handle. It made the handle a lot more secure - the paper micarta was just too slick! The last thing I did was get a kydex sheath made for it. I got it from a guy who goes by the handle "jailhack" on the forums. He does great work, and it is an excellent sheath! It is set up for reverse draw so when you draw the knife it is in reverse grip.

As for that 8670 - who knows? I've never heard of it so I can't comment one way or the other. I DO know A2 kicks major ass. It is one of my favorite blade steels.

Right let me rephrase that the new steel is great… I haven’t had A2 before but 8670 seems to hold up well under many conditions. This is my opinion:D

Sorry about the other post, it was written in a hurry and I didn’t get a chance to check my spelling and grammar…
