Several months ago I contacted John Howser of Frankfort, Kentucky regarding having a slimline trapper built. I'd come to like the pattern and the closest piece I'd had in my collection was a Tom Krein'd Queen "Utility" in cocobolo which I received from a good friend as a gift a year or two back.

John said he could build one for me and have it delivered for Christmas.
I asked John to put bone scales on the knife which would give it a "vintage" look.

The knife arrived today and before my wife could snatch it away and put it under the tree I spent a few minutes touching up the edge, oiling the joints and applying mineral oil to the scales.

I also took the following shots under harsh incandescent lighting in my shop since it was already past sunset. (Please don't judge the knife by the poor images.)

The knife has very good fit and finish and nice grind lines. The pull is a bit light but not inappropriately so. (My other Howser knife, on the other hand, has a quite firm pull.)

Stats:

Slimline Trapper
4 1/16" Closed
2 1/8 ounces
Integral Frame/Bolsters (410 SS)
ATS-34 (Cryo treated)
Jigged Bone (an old set from John's personal collection)
"Sword" Shield

And now, the subject of discussion:

The knife has been seized by Mrs. Blues and is now hidden somewhere safe under our tree.

As always, comments and observations are welcome...

Edited to add new images on Christmas morning:

Very nice, Elliott!

John did a great job making those scales look vintage.

Only 5 more days until Christmas.:D

Ooh, pointy! Those scales really do give that knife a vintage look, very nicely done.

You must've been a very good boy this year. First Enrique's HTT and now this slimline. That's quite a haul and it's not even Christmas yet. :D

That is amazing Elliott.

The scales look like they could be a hundred years old.

Merry Christmas! :D

Thanks, guys.

John couldn't even remember where he had gotten that bone from. Guess it's been in his bag of tricks for a while. :p

I'll try to get better images in natural light after the knife shows up again.

Thanks for the good wishes and right back at ya!

Elliott, that deep swedge gives the knife a totally unique look that I really like.
The bone, shield, and of course the maker are all terrific as well.
I'd say you are enjoying your holiday season quite well, eh? ;)
