John Howser Slipjoint

Fair enough.
Vince I must say you are a cruel man posting pictures of beautiful knives, by makers who do not have internet access :grumpy::D:D:D

Vince,

I think the scales on your knife look great even though they're not a perfect match. I'm pretty sure that it was Bernard Levine that wrote on his forum that it's something of a misnomer that scales used to be perfectly matched.

Then someone came up with the "this knife was on a display board back in the Stone Age" sales angle as a way to try to enhance their sales pitch or explain scales that didn't match perfectly.

Those old knives were just tools; as long as they were pointy and sharp, I don't think people back then bummed out too much over mismatched scales.

I don't worry about slight mismatches and I wouldn't worry at all about this one Vince just got. On the other hand, the main reason I don't care for giraffe bone is because it is so often mismatched and often dramatically mismatched. Stag bothers me too unless it is really nice and that's why I don't request it much on my custom orders.

Good stuff here, but I am not bummed out... I am quite pleased
I told John Howser I wanted the same bone on two more knives from him,and if they came out this way with the different colorings, that was fine.
I think the bone is gorgeous. It would be nice to have both sides more the same, but this is just as nice.Like a knifemaker once told me,it's two views.
Thanks for posting that tidbit on the bone Mike, well put.
Thanks for all your comments on this one,and Mitch, she's riding in the pocket today.

I didn't mean to imply that you were bummed out. How could you be bummed out over such a great looking knife? Can't wait to see the others you get from Howser.

No I got ya....
It is interesting, though,John said the scales were pre cut for a Gunnstock pattern, and he had 2 sets avail,at the time, when he made this. But since they were pre cut,he estimated, that the righty and lefty, were both the same with the slight discoloration,so swapping them would not work, because of the size of the 4" knife. If you follow.
He is looking into getting more, for my knives.
