Kronckew,

Is that a Barong there in the lower right of the last pic, the one with the big flat blade and curved light wood handle? I love the looks of that one! Please tell me where you got it! Is it a one of a kind, or is that a common design? I have seen several barongs, but the blades did not seem to me to be nearly that wide, and the handles not nearly as nice.

Thanks for any info!

Regards,

Norm

hi norm, got it from Linky - its quite well made not overly thick, heavy brass bolster, blade is convex grind on starboard side only, port side is flat as a pancake (ish) i think it's possibly slightly concave in that if i hold a straight edge across it i can just see a slight dishing. nice, slight hamon noticeable, appears differentially tempered. scabbard is ok but belt loop is just nailed on, i'm gonna change that. could do with a bit of carving too.

Does anybody know what ever happened to John Powell's planned Khuk Book?

That would be a book that would go right to the top of my buy list. I'd like to see it in a nice edition with good color pictures, and yes, I'd be willing to pay more for it!

Thanks Kronckew! Be cool to see if you could make the entire edge convex. Guess you would have to take off quite a bit of metal though...

Thanks again.

Oops, just remembered you are in the UK. I'll try to find a US distributor for it...

I didn't know the Cas Iberia one was so nice. I may have to pick one up now.

Skyler, IS Kronckews Barong from CI? Don't want to send away to the UK for it and pay taxes and shipping.

I'll have to wait until I get home to check, as the police here won't allow me to access the "inappropriate and offensive" Cas Iberia web site.

It sure looks like it, the link to the site is the Cas Iberia one. I have heard good things about Cas Filipino swords and daggers.

Kronc,

First rate collection of ethnic blades. I am drooling like a freak here. Just dang impressive. Speachless.

but do you have anything exotic? besides all those have bent or wavy blades....

Q2: i blame the postal service for that , they keep arriving all bent up. one of the badek is straight tho., at least until it is forced down to a point at the end

Q1: Oh!, well how about the ones the alien from arcturus made for me, they're straight in 5 dimensions with scrimshawed black diamond klien bottle grips. no, wait the battery in my camera is dead, so it'l have to wait a while....

kronckew .. I tell you what .. you have one very "ugly" kujang .. just send it to me if ever you want to throw it away ..

You mean this ol' thing?

the scabbard and handgrip are all swirly with black spots and streaks and the wood isn't even the same colour all over it. the blade is all covered with this black stuff along with funny looking silver streaks. and it only has three holes at the top, a proper islamic one i have been told has five to match the five pillars, so it is one of the old pre-islamic ones. not very desireable looking & not worth the effort to mail it out, so i guess i'll hold on to it for a while. ;)

Also, the magic tells me it wants to live here with me.

Here is another wall section of JPs collection: Some of his kothimodas

very many moons ago i made a silly mistake with a rifle & was made to sleep with it, (springfield A303) was uncomfortable enough (had the pre-ww2 extra long bayonet on it) that i've never needed to have a weapon there again (have had a few bang-bangs beside, under and hanging on but never 'in')

for those who need to know as a cadet midshipman i was issued the '03 & had it with me for 3 years (4th year as a cadet officer i carried a sword instead). i also had a m1 garand for more formal drill meets when i was a member of the 'Pershing Rifles'. never call your rifle a 'gun', gets the gods angry, and you don't want to see them when they're angry....

Can't really see how they are hooked up there.

Tsimi, IIRC John once mentioned that he hung them up with string at the top and bottom of the scabbards. A heavy monofilament would be just the ticket if you used good knots that wouldn't untie themselves.

One thing anyone must do when hanging edged weapons/tools on any wall is to make damned sure they are extremely secure.
I'm assuming that most of us have now heard about the teenage boy that had a POS ornamental sword that his mother bought him fall on him and cut his shoulder and neck IIRC. Killed him pretty quick. Him and his two brothers or friends was wrestling around in his bedroom and it got knocked off the wall where it was hung. Damned tragic accident and something I don't want to happen to my friend anywhere but especially here.
